Embodiments of the present invention relate generally to certain types of reciprocating positive-displacement pumps (which may be referred to hereinafter as 'pods,' “pump pods,” or “pod pumps”) used to pump fluids, such as a biological fluid (e.g., blood or peritoneal fluid), a therapeutic fluid (e.g., a medication solution), or a surfactant fluid. The pumps may be configured specifically to impart low shear forces and low turbulence on the fluid as the fluid is pumped from an inlet to an outlet. Such pumps may be particularly useful in pumping fluids that may be damaged by such shear forces (e.g., blood, and particularly heated blood, which is prone to hemolysis) or turbulence (e.g., surfactants or other fluids that may foam or otherwise be damaged or become unstable in the presence of turbulence).

Fluid pumping systems, devices and methods

Systems and methods for providing respiratory therapy are disclosed. The system includes a nebulizer operable to aerosolize a medicament, a cylindrical mixing chamber, an impacting cap and a recirculation tube. The mixing chamber has an inlet port, an outlet port, an aerosol port in fluid communication with the nebulizer, and a drainage port. The inlet port receives a flow of breathing gas. The mixing chamber receives the aerosol via the aerosol port, entrains aerosol into the flow of breathing gas, and delivers the breathing gas entrained with aerosol to the outlet port. The impacting cap receives and coalesces a portion of the aerosol into droplets within the space defined by the mixing chamber and the impacting cap. The mixing chamber is also configured to direct rain-out resulting from the droplets to the drainage port. The system also includes a recirculation tube to return the rain-out to the nebulizer.

Systems and methods for providing respiratory therapy are disclosed. One device includes a nasal cannula comprising at least at one nasal prong, tubing and a breathing gas conduit. The nasal prong has a proximal tip and a distal end connected to the breathing gas conduit. The breathing gas conduit has an inlet port, an outlet port, and a walled flow path connecting the inlet and outlet ports, such that the conduit directs the breathing gas from the tubing to the proximal tip of the nasal prong. A nebulizer is secured to the nasal cannula and operable to aerosolize a medicament via a vibrating mesh. The vibrating mesh is secured to the nasal cannula and is positioned adjacent to the breathing gas conduit such that the aerosol is entrained with the breathing gas at proximal tip of the nasal prong.

The systems, devices, and methods described herein relate to providing breathing gas to a patient using a base unit and an auxiliary unit configured to be removably disposed on or at least partially in the base unit. The base unit has several couplings for improved control and sensing of the auxiliary unit and its components, wherein the couplings are configured to be non-contact with the corresponding components of the auxiliary unit and/or otherwise configured to minimize operational defects or improve efficiency. Non-contact couplings include induction heating, capacitive level sensing, a magnetically coupled rotor pump, RFID tag and reader, and Hall effect sensing. The breathing gas can be provided at high velocities by setting breathing gas flowrates based on dimensions of a nasal cannula used to direct the breathing gas into a patient's nares.

Respiratory therapy unit with non-contact sensing and control

Systems, methods, and devices for humidifying a breathing gas using a vapor transfer unit are presented. The method includes providing a first vapor transfer unit having a gas passage and a liquid passage, delivering a liquid to the liquid passage, delivering a gas to the gas passage, humidifying the gas by delivering vapor from the liquid in the liquid passage to the gas in the gas passage, exiting the humidified gas outside the vapor transfer unit at first relative humidity and at a high gas flow rate, and reducing the gas flow rate through the first vapor transfer unit to less than a low gas flow rate, while preventing the relative humidity from exceeding the first relative humidity by more than an acceptable margin.

Systems and methods for humidity control

Provided herein are devices, systems, and methods for providing respiratory therapy to a patient using a nasal cannula comprising a cannula body, first and second inlet tubes, and a nasal prong for the delivery of a flow of breathing gas to the patient. Configured with the cannula is a nebulizer having an aerosol generator positioned to emit aerosolized medicament along a longitudinal axis of the nasal prong. A flow director is configured to direct the flow of breathing gas into the nasal prong such that the breathing gas flows along the longitudinal axis, such that the flow of aerosolized medicament is contained within the flow of breathing gas as it moves along the longitudinal axis of the nasal prong for delivery to the patient.

Described are fluid pumping and fluid handling systems, which may be suitable for use in medical devices, such as artificial or extracorporeal blood pumping systems. The systems can include a dual housing configuration for pneumatic actuation comprising a main housing containing a pump cassette comprising a pneumatically actuated pump and pneumatically actuated valves. The pump can include a pump actuation chamber and pump pneumatic port, and the valves can each include a valve actuation chamber and valve pneumatic port. Connecting tubes can be used to fluidly connect the pump actuation ports and valve actuation ports to a tube-support housing having a first side receiving one end of each connecting tube and a second side providing a pneumatic interface arranged to connect to an array of pneumatic receptacles on a base unit of the system to facilitate easy, compact and accurate pneumatic interconnection between the pump cassette and the base unit.

A cannula for providing respiratory therapy to a patient includes a first nasal prong having a proximal end attached to a cannula body and a distal end for insertion into a nare of the patient. The first nasal prong defines a lumen for a flow of breathing gas from a source of breathing gas to the nare of the patient, and the first nasal prong has a variable geometry such that a cross-sectional area of the lumen at the distal end of the first nasal prong varies with a flow rate of the breathing gas. Varying the cross-sectional area of the first nasal prong lumen with the flow rate of the breathing gas enables the first nasal prong to maintain a high velocity flow to the nare for effective flushing of the patient's airway.

Variable geometry cannula

Systems, methods, and devices for humidifying a breathing gas are presented. The system includes a base unit, a vapor transfer unit, a nasal cannula, and a liquid container. The base unit includes a blower. The vapor transfer unit is external to the base unit and includes a gas passage, a liquid passage, a gas outlet, and a membrane separating the gas passage and the liquid passage. The membrane permits transfer of vapor into the gas passage from liquid in the liquid passage. The nasal cannula is coupled to the gas outlet. The liquid container is configured to reversibly mate with the base unit.

Systems and methods for high velocity nasal insufflation

Systems, methods, and devices are disclosed for manufacturing a vapor transfer cartridge with a constant inner diameter to maximize the area available for fibers required for heating and humidifying a breathing gas. In one aspect, a vapor transfer cartridge includes a center tube extending along a first axis from a first to a second end, having a continuous inner diameter, a first header piece configured as a cap and including a channel about an inner circumference of the header piece coupled to the first end of the center tube, a second header piece coupled to the second end of the center tube, and a plurality of fibers arranged along the axis of the center tube from the first end to the second end. The first header piece further includes a first port, and a baffle.

Vapor transfer cartridge

Embodiments of the invention are directed toward a novel pressurized vapor cycle for distilling liquids. In some embodiments of the invention, a liquid purification system is revealed, including the elements of an input for receiving untreated liquid, a vaporizer coupled to the input for transforming the liquid to vapor, a head chamber for collecting the vapor, a vapor pump with an internal drive shaft and an eccentric rotor with a rotatable housing for compressing vapor, and a condenser in communication with the vapor pump for transforming the compressed vapor into a distilled product. Other embodiments of the invention are directed toward heat management, and other process enhancements for making the system especially efficient.
