Devices and methods for use in a hip replacement surgical procedure. One aspect includes methods and devices for reaming selective regions of the femoral canal. This may include reaming distal and proximal sections of the femoral canal prior to reaming a middle region of the canal. Another aspect includes a dummy implant and methods of use. The dummy implant is inserted into the femoral canal and may be used for one or more of retraction of the femur, gauging a space with the acetabulum, and further revising the femoral cut. The aspects may be used together in a single surgical procedure or separately in different surgical procedures.

A tool and method of reaming one or more oblong cross-sectional sections of the femoral canal. The tool may include a reamer sized to be axially inserted into the canal and to be laterally pivoted within the canal. The tool may further include a guide to protect a proximal section of the femur. The guide also includes a channel through which the reamer is inserted to control an extent of movement of the reamer.

Methods and systems for reaming the femoral canal

Trephine reamers that include a body with a hollow interior sized to receive a femoral component. A distal end of the body includes one or more teeth shaped for cutting the femur. Valleys are positioned between the teeth. The valleys accommodate the cut bone and prevent and/or reduce interference with the cutting teeth. Thus, a single trephine reamer is able to cut a greater amount of bone. Methods of cutting the femur including positioning the trephine reamer over the femoral component, and rotating the reamer such that the teeth cut the bone that extends around the component. The reamer moves along the length of the component during the cutting thus allowing for removal of the component.

Methods and devices for preparing an acetabulum for receiving an acetabular component in a hip replacement procedure. The methods may include aligning a first guide in an acetabular notch of the acetabulum and determining a reference point in the acetabulum. The first guide is removed from the acetabulum and then a second guide is positioned in the acetabulum and oriented with the reference point. While the second guide is positioned in the acetabulum, the acetabular margin is reamed with a reamer. During reaming, the reamer is contacted against a rim of the second guide which prevents additional reaming of the acetabular notch below the rim of the second guide.

Methods and systems for preparing the acetabulum to receive an acetabular component in a hip replacement surgical procedure

Guides configured to guide one or more osteotomes to remove a femoral component that is implanted in a femur. When implanted, the femoral component includes a stem implanted within the femur, a proximal end that extends from the femur, and a receptacle in the proximal end. The guides are configured to attach to the femoral component and attach to the receptacle in the femoral component. The guides include one or more openings sized to guide the osteotomes along the stem of the femoral component. The guides may further include multiple different sections that can be attached together.

An acetabular component of a hip replacement implant that is configured to be attached to an acetabulum and to receive a femoral component of the hip replacement implant. The component includes a concave body with a closed end configured to seat against the acetabulum and an open end configured to receive the femoral component. At least one radiological marker is positioned on the body and is visibly distinct from the body on X-ray imaging. The radiological markers may include an elongated shape with a length measured between a first end and a second end. The radiological markers may be shorter than the body such that they do not extend completely around the body and the first and second ends are spaced apart from one another.

The present invention is a self-measuring container that dispenses only a specific amount of fluid each time fluid is poured from the container. This container has a storage chamber where the fluid initially resides and a measuring/dispensing chamber, below the storage chamber, where the specific amount of the fluid that will be dispensed during the next pouring operation resides. An aperture at one end of the container connects the storage and dispensing chambers. This aperture permits the fluid in the storage chamber to flow into the dispensing chamber. The container dispenses the fluid through an exit channel that extends from the dispensing chamber to the top of the container. The storage chamber bottom serves to separate the storage and dispensing chambers and acts as a barrier during a pouring operation to prevent fluid from flowing from the storage chamber to the dispensing chamber until desired. In another embodiment, the storage and dispensing chamber do not have a common wall, but the dispensing chamber is formed to minimize the draw necessary during the formation process. The measuring chamber may also contain a diaphragm to permit the volume within the chamber to be adjusted.

The subject invention provides a bowl having recessed acquisition features that permit the bowl to be manipulated by humans without providing protrusions that could be grasped by an animal, through biting or otherwise. In one embodiment, the recessed acquisition feature is formed by two spaced apart slots recessed in the exterior wall of the bowl. Each slot is characterized by a first wall oriented to face the opposing slot and a second wall oriented to face the interior cavity, each wall being substantially vertical or negatively sloped to provide a lifting surface. The thumb and a finger are placed in these slots against gripping surfaces and squeezed towards one another. The bowl may also be raised by grasping the interior wall of the cavity and the substantially vertical or negatively sloped second wall of a slot between the thumb and fingers. In another embodiment, a recessed slot is shaped to have the natural curve of a human finger. The portion of the slot wall oriented to face the interior cavity is preferably substantially vertical or negatively sloped. The curved shape of the slot permits one to apply a lifting force on the bowl. In other embodiments, the acquisition feature is an inwardly sloping, vertical slot recessed at the base edge of the bowl. The inwardly sloping portion of the slot may consist of a tab or a portion of the exterior wall of the bowl. Again, a thumb or finger disposed in the recessed slot can be used to apply a lifting force to the bowl while a stabilizing force is exerted on the bowl's rim.

A measured fluid pour method and device consisting of a container such as a drinking cup, a bottle, a large fluid drum or a container of chemicals wherein a predetermined volume of fluid is poured into another vessel or into the mouth. The device is comprised of a vessel such as a drinking cup or a container such as a bottle, an inner cup of a predetermined size, a tube fixed to the inner cup and extending to the upper end of the cup or container wherein the tube is fixed to the top of the cup or container and wherein a limited volume of fluid may enter the inner cup or container and wherein when the drinking cup or container is tilted to a pouring or drinking position, and only the amount of the fluid contained in the inner cup will flow out of the drinking cup or container.

An energy efficient aquarium system with a separate cover wherein the lamp or lamps are located below the filters and filter ponds thus heating the filter pond bottom and sides to further heat the water contained in the filter ponds thus eliminating the need for a separate heater and further saving the energy required to heat the water as it flows into the aquarium. Floats each with a filter condition indicator bar are located in the filter ponds wherein the filter condition indicator bars extend through the cover and further indicate the condition of the filter as the water rises in the filter ponds due to the filters filling up with debris that restricts the flow of water passing through the filter; as the water rises in the filter ponds, the float rises and further causes the filter condition indicator to rise wherein it may easily be seen. When the filter condition indicator rises to a predetermined height, the owner of the aquarium would be given notice that the filters need to be changed.
