A system for transmitting and receiving data is provided. The system includes a direct-conversion receiver that receives a signal modulated on a carrier frequency signal. The direct-conversion receiver includes one or more subharmonic local oscillator mixers. A local oscillator is connected to the direct conversion receiver, and generates a signal having a frequency equal to a subharmonic of the carrier frequency signal. A transmitter is connected to the local oscillator, which uses the local oscillator signal to transmit outgoing data.

System and apparatus for a direct conversion receiver and transmitter

Tunable impedance matching networks and tunable diplexer matching systems are provided. A tunable impedance matching network can include an impedance element connected between first and second nodes for communicating signals between the first and second nodes. For example, the impedance element can be a transmission line or an inductor. Further, the matching network can include a first capacitor connected in parallel with the impedance element, wherein the first capacitor is tunable. The matching network can also include a second capacitor comprising first and second terminals. The first terminal of the second capacitor can be connected to the first node. The second terminal of the second capacitor can be connected to a local voltage reference for the first node. A third capacitor comprises first and second terminals. The first terminal of the second capacitor can be connected to the second node. The second and third capacitors can also be tunable.

A system for controlling an output frequency of a dual-input voltage controlled oscillator relative to a reference frequency is provided. The method includes the step of coupling a first tune control signal to a first input of the dual-input voltage controlled oscillator. The method further includes the steps of dividing the output frequency of the dual-input voltage controlled oscillator by a value substantially equal to a second tune control signal, comparing a phase of the divided output frequency with a phase of the reference frequency and coupling a phase difference of the compared phases to a second input of the dual-input voltage controlled oscillator.

Dual-tune input integrated VCO on a chip

A BALUN circuit comprising a lead network coupled to the positive phase output of a differential power amplifier, a negative phase output coupled to the negative phase output of the differential amplifier, and a delay element coupled in series with the lag network. The output of the lead network and the delay element are combined to form a single-ended output. The lag and lead networks may adjust the output impedances of the positive and negative phase outputs so that the output impedance of the single-ended output is set to a desired value. In one implementation, selected components of the lag and lead networks, and the delay element, comprise printed elements.

BALUN circuit for combining differential power amplifier outputs

A constant envelope modulator and transmit architecture for a wireless communication system is provided and a method for operating the same. The constant envelope modulator includes a differential encoder which receives data to be transmitted and creates in-phase and quadrature components of a modulation signal to be transmitted. The in-phase and quadrature components are passed through digital filters in order to give the modulation a particular shape. The in-phase and quadrature components of the modulation signal have both phase information and amplitude information on the modulation, where the constant envelope modulator removes the amplitude modulation (AM) information from the modulation signal to provide constant envelope in-phase and quadrature modulation signals and an accompanying AM envelope signal. The resultant constant envelope in-phase and quadrature modulation signals are combined at a radio frequency for transmission into a constant envelope phase modulation signal. The constant envelope phase modulation signal is fed through a non-linear power amplifier to bring the modulation signal to a proper output power level for transmission. The AM content of the modulation signal is then reintroduced into the constant envelope phase modulation signal at the non-linear power amplifier after the point of amplification of the constant envelope phase modulation signal in order to reintroduce the amplitude information into the signal. The constant envelope modulator and transmit architecture of the present invention allows the entire structure to be operated in an efficient, non-linear mode.

Non-linear constant envelope modulator and transmit architecture

A non-linear power amplifier for amplifying a constant envelope phase modulation component of a modulation signal and combining an amplitude envelope component of the modulation signal into the amplified constant envelope phase modulation component and method for performing the same. The power amplifier receives a constant envelope phase modulation signal and transmits the signal through a pair of amplifier stages which are impedance matched together. The first amplifier stage has a fixed gain which drives an impedance load and, in turn, the second amplifier stage. A variable resistance device is connected between a base of an amplifying transistor in the second amplifier stage and electrical ground for variably controlling the gain of the second amplifier stage by variably controlling the base-to-ground resistance of the amplifying transistor in the second amplifier stage. By varying the base-to-ground resistance of the amplifying transistor, the pulse width, gain, and power output of the constant envelope phase modulation signal can be controlled. The amplitude envelope component of the modulation signal is then reintroduced into the amplified constant envelope phase modulation component at a low current point between the base of the amplifying transistor and the variable resistance device, which enables the power amplifier to be operated with a low current consumption.
