This invention relates to compositions containing improved granulated hexabromocyclododecane flame retardant products, flame retardant formulations containing products, and to a process for forming the improved granulated flame retardant products, wherein the granulated product is characterized as having a friability loss of less than about 8 percent.

Granulated flame retardant products

This invention relates to an improvement in a process for preparing tetrabromophthalic anhydride whereby there is a substantial recovery of reactants such as halogen and SO.sub.3 from a vent stream exiting the reaction vessel. The improvement comprises contacting the vent stream with a fluid having a first oleum concentration and recovering a halogen stream and a second stream, having a second oleum concentration wherein the second oleum concentration is greater than the first oleum concentration.

Tetrahalophthalic anhydride process

Alkylaluminoxanes are made by conducting a solution of an alkylaluminum (e.g. trimethyl aluminum) in an inert solvent to the top of an upright hollow column and allowing the solution to flow as a thin film down the inner surface of the column while passing a wet inert gas (e.g. nitrogen) up through the column such that the wet inert gas contacts the thin falling film of alkyl aluminum solution forming alkylaluminoxane.

Falling film aluminoxane process

Alkylaluminoxanes are made in a continuous process by feeding an inert solvent solution of an alkyl aluminum compound and a water/inert solvent emulsion to a first reaction vessel maintained at about -20.degree. to 30.degree. C. and transferring reaction mixture to a second reaction zone at a rate which maintains a constant liquid level in the first reaction vessel and results in an average residence time of about 1-60 minutes.

Alkylaluminoxane process

Hydrocarbylaluminoxanes, especially methylaluminoxane, having high catalytic activity in the polymerization of olefins are made in high yield and low gel content by impinging (1) a solution of a hydrocarbyl aluminum, e.g. trimethyl aluminum, in an inert solvent, e.g. toleune, with (2) a water dispersion in an inert solvent (e.g. toluene) in a T-shaped reactor such that the hydrocarbyl aluminum and water immediately react to form an aluminoxane solution which is promptly removed from the T-shaped reactor through its third arm. The water dispersion is formed by passing a solvent/water mixture through a static mixer which comprises a plurality of deflection vanes forming a tortuous path through the static mixer causing extremely turbulent flow.
