A system and method for managing a plurality of messages stored at a mobile communication device, groups messages based on a common subject line or another quasi-unique identifier, and displays message group entries representing distinct message groups in a user interface. The message group entries may be displayed in association with an icon representing multiple message states associated with individual messages comprised within that message group. The multiple message states may include all messages being read, all messages being unread, a most recently received message being unread while others are read, and a most recently received message being read while order messages are unread.

A method and apparatus for performing a variable data capture process at a data capture device comprising a data capture module and a trigger mechanism is provided. In operation, the data capture device detects an initial activation of the trigger mechanism. In response to the activation, data capture is initiated at the data capture module. A method for providing a customized user interface for group communication at a communication device is provided. An electronic processor determines a list of communication groups with which a user identifier of the communication device is registered and identifies a communication group type for each communication group in the list based on service capabilities of the respective communication group. The electronic processor assigns a set of communication group types for the user identifier and determines a type of group communication application to be configured at the communication device. The electronic processor then generates user interface elements as a function of the set of communication group types and the type of group communication application and configures the group communication application including the user interface elements at the communication device for supporting group communication.

A system and method are provided wherein SMS-only contacts are integrated into an IM environment. An IM contact list interface distinguishes between SMS and IM chats (and contacts), such that limitations and potential differential costs associated with the respective mediums can be identified. The system is also configured to route SMS messages into the IM contact list interface for later filtering and/or selection by the user. By providing SMS-specific categories with the IM contact list interface SMS integration operations such as routing of SMS messages can be controlled to avoid degrading the user's experience.
