Flexible composites, such as those useful as light pipes, may be effectively cured by reactions upon copolymerized alkoxysilane functionality. Improvements in the optical properties of the uncured and cured systems are found when the alkoxysilane monomer is stabilized during preparation, storage, and copolymerization with low levels of non-aromatic stable free radicals or stable free-radical precursors, such as nitroxides.

Cured composite and process therefor

The present invention describes a method for inhibiting the polymerization of unsaturated silanes by the addition of a non-aromatic stable free radical during any of the steps of the formation of the desired silane, the purification of the desired silane, and to the desired silanes, as well as compositions of the inhibitors and the silanes. Particular classes of silanes to be inhibited include acryloxy-, methacryloxy-, and vinyl- functional silanes. The free radicals for use as inhibitors include various nitroxides. The free radicals taught herein are effective as inhibitors at elevated temperatures, for extended periods of time, and even in the absence of molecular oxygen.

Stabilizers for unsaturated, polymerizable organosilicon compounds

This invention provides a process for making a silylorganocarbamate or a silylisocyanurate which process comprises reacting an aminosilane with a dialkyl carbonate, diaryl carbonate or a mixture thereof in the presence of a basic catalyst to obtain the silylorganocarbamate; optionally, neutralizing the basic catalyst and residual aminosilane with a neutralizing agent; and adding a cracking catalyst and heating at subatmospheric pressure to obtain the silylisocyanurate; or heating a silylorganocarbamate at a temperature sufficient for dissociation of the carbamate at subatmospheric pressure in the presence of a cracking catalyst and a timerization catalyst to obtain a silylisocyanurate.

Process for making a silylisocyanurate

A method for reducing the level of acidic halide contamination in alkoxysilanes by contacting the silane with a stoichiometric excess of (i) a basic reagent, such as in particular, a metal alkoxide and (ii) an acid salt.

Acidic halide neutralization in alkoxysilanes

Compositions containing an acryloxysilane or a methacryloxysilane and an N,N-dialkylaminomethylene phenol in an amount at least sufficient to inhibit polymerization of the silane during its formation, purification and storage. Methods for producing such compositions are also provided.

Inhibited acryloxysilanes and methacryloxysilanes

A method for reducing the level of acidic halide contamination in alkoxy silanes, particularly amino alkoxy silanes, by contacting said silane with a salt of an acid having a dissociation constant of greater than about 10.sup.-15.
