A. process for producing an overbased oil soluble calcium sulfonate, comprising the steps of: (a) mixing a substrate comprising a sulfonic acid or a calcium salt of a sulfonic acid, with at least one alcohol, a diluent oil, a carboxylic acid, an acidic material, water and calcium oxide to form a mixture; (b) heating the mixture to its reflux point to form a neutral calcium salt of the acid moieties; (c) removing a substantial portion of distillable solvents to form an intermediate residue; (d) adding to the intermediate residue at least one alcohol, a surfactant, calcium oxide and water such that for every 100 parts of substrate, there are not more than 25 parts water to form an intimate mixture having a direct base number of 90-250; (e) heating said intimate mixture (d) to below its reflux point to form a heated intimate mixture; (f) passing gaseous carbon dioxide into the heated intimate mixture (e) to form an overbased calcium sulfonate and a mixture of calcium hydroxide, calcium carbonate and regenerated water until the direct base number is from 90-150; (g) adding additional calcium oxide until the direct base number is from 90-250 followed by the passing of additional gaseous carbon dioxide until the direct base number is from 90-150; (h) continuing the passsing of gaseous carbon dioxide to a direct base number of 0-75 after the last portion of calcium oxide is added; (i) removing any distillable solvents to form a final residue; and (j) filtering the final residue to obtain a substantially solvent-free and solids-free oil soluble overbased calcium sulfonate; with the proviso that calcium oxide is the only substantial source of overbasing calcium.

Process for making overbased calcium sulfonate detergents using calcium oxide and a less than stoichiometric amount of water

A process for producing an overbased oil soluble calcium sulfonate, comprising the steps of: (a) mixing a substrate comprising a sulfonic acid or a calcium salt of a sulfonic acid, with at least one alcohol, a diluent oil, a carboxylic acid, an acidic material, water and calcium oxide to form a mixture; (b) heating the mixture to its reflux point to form a neutral calcium salt of the acid moieties; (c) removing a substantial portion of distillable solvents to form an intermediate residue; (d) adding to the intermediate residue at least one alcohol, a surfactant, calcium oxide and water such that for every 100 parts of substrate, there are not more than 25 parts water to form an intimate mixture having a direct base number of 90-250; (e) heating said intimate mixture (d) to below its reflux point to form a heated intimate mixture; (f) passing gaseous carbon dioxide into the heated intimate mixture (e) to form an overbased calcium sulfonate and a mixture of calcium hydroxide, calcium carbonate and regenerated water until the direct base number is from 90-150; (g) adding additional calcium oxide until the direct base number is from 90-250 followed by the passing of additional gaseous carbon dioxide until the direct base number is from 90-150; (h) continuing the passing of gaseous carbon dioxide to a direct base number of 0-75 after the last portion of calcium oxide is added; (i) removing any distillable solvents to form a final residue; and (j) filtering the final residue to obtain a substantially solvent-free and solids-free oil soluble overbased calcium sulfonate; with the proviso that calcium oxide is the only substantial source of overbasing calcium.

Process for making overbased calcium sulfonate detergents using calcium

The present invention is directed to a process for preparing a gelled overbased calcium carboxylate which involves carbonating a carboxylic acid of 8 to 30 carbon atoms in the presence of a promoter system consisting of water and an alcohol of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, such that the mole ratio of alcohol to water is substantially constant and is such that the viscosity of the reaction mixture during carbonation step does not exceed 1 pascal second (1000 centipoise). This process prevents excessive thickening of the reaction mixture in a manufacturing unit during carbonation and affords ample time to complete the process of carbonation without premature crystallization of the calcium carbonate formed during overbasing.

Overbased carboxylate gels

A short-term test procedure for comparing the engine sludge performance of different engine oils to a reference oil. The test procedure involves establishing a base line by operating one or more engines on the reference oil while maintaining a substantially constant volume of the reference oil in the engines without changing the oil until a Coordinating Research Council (CRC) sludge rating within a preferred range of 8.5 to 9.0 is achieved. In like manner, a series of engine tests are performed on one or more test oils using engines substantially identical to the reference oil engines for substantially the same number of miles as the average test miles of all of the reference oil engines under substantially the same test conditions as the reference oil engines while maintaining substantially the same volume of the test oil in the engines as the reference oil without changing the test oil in the engines throughout the tests. The average overall sludge rating for each test oil is then calculated based on all of the tests on each test oil, and compared to the average overall sludge rating for the reference oil to determine relative sludge performance.
