A zinc-aluminum alloy coating having desirable ductile properties and a uniform fine grain structure having excellent wettability for a ferrous metal substrate comprises greater than about 25 percent by weight aluminum and zinc, wherein the alloy further includes from about 0.1 to about 1.0 percent by weight of a rare earth alloy for enhancing the wettability of the alloy to the ferrous metal and the balance comprises additional additives and impurities. With alloys having increased concentration of aluminum, the solubility of the rare earth alloy is increased, thereby increasing wettability.

Zinc-aluminum alloy coatings for steel

There is disclosed an alloy for use in a zinc galvanizing bath comprising zinc, aluminum and a rare earth-containing alloy such as mischmetal. According to the preferred embodiments, the alloy contains from about 85% to about 97% zinc, from about 3% to about 15% aluminum and from about 5 ppm to about 1.0% mischmetal. The alloy may also contain one or more of the elements Fe, Pb, Sb, Mg, Sn, Cu and Si.

Zinc-aluminum alloys and coatings

A dispersion composition and a method for coating the surface of steel casting dies for molten metals are described. The dispersion composition comprises boron nitride powder dispersed in a peroxide-modified aqueous dispersion of a water-dispersible film-forming polymer. The coating composition provides thermal insulation to the mold surface, thereby minimizing premature solidification of the cast metal.

Water-dispersible coatings containing boron nitride for steel casting

A composition and method for coating the surface of steel casting dies for molten metals are described. The composition comprises a dispersion of boron nitride powder, an elastomeric polymer and an organic solvent or diluent. The elastomeric polymer consists of two fractions, a high-polymer fraction and a low-polymer fraction. The treatment provides thermal insulation to the mold surface, thereby minimizing premature solidification of the cast metal.

Boron nitride/elastomeric polymer composition for coating steel casting

A process for simultaneously preheating and preparing a ferrous surface, prior to the depositing thereon of galvanized zinc coatings, replaces conventional fluxing techniques with the step of immersing a ferrous object in a bath of a molten salt or salts. The salts are chosen so that they are liquid at a temperature below that of the zinc coating step. The liquid acts as a non-fuming flux and preheat for the surface. Particular salts include metallic hydroxides and halides.
