A liquid crystal compound satisfies at least one of physical properties such as a high stability to heat, light and so forth, a high clearing point, a low minimum temperature of a liquid crystal phase, a small viscosity, a suitable optical anisotropy, a large negative dielectric anisotropy, a suitable elastic constant and an excellent compatibility with other liquid crystal compounds. The compound is represented by formula (1).  In the formula, for example, Rand Rare alkyl having 1 to 15 carbons; ring Aand ring Aare 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene, Zand Zare a single bond, &#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;, &#x2014;CH&#x2550;CH&#x2014;, &#x2014;C&#x2261;C&#x2014;, &#x2014;COO&#x2014;, &#x2014;OCO&#x2014;, &#x2014;CHO&#x2014;, &#x2014;OCH&#x2014;, &#x2014;CFO&#x2014;, &#x2014;OCF&#x2014; or &#x2014;CF&#x2550;CF&#x2014;, a and b are 0, 1 or 2, and a sum of a and b is 1 or 2.

The subject is to provide a liquid crystal compound satisfying at least one of physical properties such as a high stability to heat or light, a high clearing point (or a high maximum temperature), a low minimum temperature of a liquid crystal phase, a small viscosity, a suitable optical anisotropy, a large dielectic anisotropy, a suitable elastic constant and an excellent compatibility with any other liquid crystal compound, a liquid crystal composition including this compound and a liquid crystal display device including this composition. The compound is represented by the following formula (1a): wherein Ris alkyl having 1 to 15 carbons or the like; ring A, ring A, ring Aand ring Aare independently 1,4-phenylene, naphthalene-2,6-diyl or the like; Zand Zare independently a single bond or the like; o and p are independently 0, 1 or 2; and n is an integer from 2 to 10.

To provide a liquid crystal compound having a large negative value of dielectric anisotropy (&#x394;&#x2208;). The invention is to provide a new liquid crystal compound having a high clearing point, a good compatibility with other compounds, a small viscosity, and a high stability to heat, light and so forth; compound (1) is provided:RCFR&#x2003;&#x2003;(1)wherein, for example, Ris alkyl having 4 to 10 carbons or &#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;CH&#x2550;CH, Ris alkyl having 2 to 10 carbons, n is 8, and Rand Rare not allowed to be straight-chain alkyl having an identical number of carbons.
