Described herein are coatings which impart oil, grease, and water resistance to various materials, such as paper, paperboard and polymeric materials. Such coatings may be applied as barrier coatings to the substrate materials in order to inhibit and prevent the transmission of oil, grease and water; that is, to prevent oil, water grease from passing into and/or through the substrate material. The coatings include an acrylic-based polymer latex, a styrene-butadiene rubber latex, a styrene-acrylic resin solution, a large particle size wax, and optionally, a small particle size wax. Also disclosed herein is a process of preparing the coatings. Also disclosed are products to which the coatings have been applied in order to impart oil, grease and/or water resistance, and processes for preparing such products.

Grease, oil, and water resistant coating compositions

The present invention discloses a method of enabling the easy separation of labels, including wrap around labels and sleeve labels, particularly shrink sleeve labels, from containers during recycling through the use of a specially formulated coating to be applied in the seam area. The coatings ensure proper bonding, and shrink properties, of the labels, and have been designed to help de-bonding of the seam in a hot caustic wash step, or a solvent wash step. The method does not rely on floatation separation and therefore may be applied to any container/label material combination regardless of their specific gravity differences.

Shrink wrap label coating to facilitate recycling

The present disclosure relates to a coating composition used to form a bond in the seam area of a label substrate material that wraps around an article and is shrunk in conformance to the size and shape of the article. The coating composition is comprised of at least first and second resins, and in some instances, third resins as described herein. The coating composition provides good bond strength in the seam area of the label, and the coating composition and/or each of the resins thereof may be at least partially hydrolysable but not solutionable in a hot caustic bath, enabling separation of the label from the article during recycling. Further disclosed is a method providing for the separation of labels from the articles, and further disclosed are labeled articles employing the coating compositions.

Provided is a coating composition that include a first resin having a Tg above about 25&#xb0; C. and a second resin having a Tg above about 50&#xb0; C. The coating composition and/or resins thereof are at least partially hydrolysable in a hot caustic solution. Further provided are a method for applying the coating composition to a label substrate, a label substrate coated with the coating composition, and a recycling method. Sleeve labels for articles such as containers may be formed from label substrates by forming a bonded seam with the coating composition. The coating composition maintains the bond in the seam during sleeve label shrinking and during article life. Label removal during recycling is relatively easy, as the coating composition in the seam de-bonds in a hot caustic solution.

A composition which cures in ambient conditions to form a film substantially impenetrable to heavy metals, contains water, a water-miscible organic solvent, a water-borne primary resin having a glass transition temperature of 25 degrees C. or less, and a hydrophobic surfactant.
