The invention is directed to methods of diagnosing ainfection in a cucurbit plant, comprising detecting at least one nucleotide sequence selected from the group of nucleotide sequences of SEQ ID NOs: 1-52, or any combination thereof, in a sample from a cucurbit plant or in an environmental sample, thereby diagnosing ainfection. Also provided is a method of selecting a cucurbit plant comprising at least one resistance gene, the method comprising introducing into the cucurbit plant a nucleotide sequence of any one of SEQ ID NOs: 1-52, wherein the expression of the nucleotide sequence produces a hypersensitive response in a cucurbit plant comprising a resistance gene, thereby identifying the cucurbit plant as comprising a resistance gene; and selecting the plant having the hypersensitive response and identified as comprising said resistance gene.

Methods for diagnosis ofinfection and selection of plant resistance genes to the same

The invention relates to nucleic acids encoding a p-coumaroyl-CoA:monolignol transferase and to inhibitory nucleic acids adapted to inhibit the expression and/or translation of a p-coumaroyl-CoA:monolignol transferase RNA. Inhibition of p-coumaroyl-CoA:monolignol transferase in plants improves the incorporation of monolignol ferulates into the lignin of plants, giving rise to plant biomass that is more easily processed into useful products such as paper and biofuels.

The invention relates to isolated nucleic acids encoding a feruloyl-CoA:monolignol transferase and feruloyl-CoA:monolignol transferase enzymes. The isolated nucleic acids and/or the enzymes enable incorporation of monolignol ferulates into the lignin of plants, where such monolignol ferulates include, for example, p-coumaryl ferulate, coniferyl ferulate, and/or sinapyl ferulate. The invention also includes methods and plants that include nucleic acids encoding a feruloyl-CoA:monolignol transferase enzyme and/or feruloyl-CoA:monolignol transferase enzymes.
