A system for device-aware content delivery includes a distributor and a database. The distributor includes modules for determining the type of portable computing device and delivering content that is operable on the specific type of portable computing device and uses the unique capabilities of the identified portable computing device. The database includes different profiles for different portable computing devices and gives information that allows those portable computing devices to be identified by type and distinguished from each other portable computing devices during a discovery or interrogation phase. The database also stores different versions of content adapted for operation on specific device types, such that once the device type has been identified, the matching content can be sent to the portable computing device, installed and executed. The matching content is programmatic action specific to the portable computing device. The present invention also includes a number of novel methods including: a method device-aware content delivery, a general method for automatically determining a device type, a method for determining device type using a Bluetooth&#xae; protocol and a method for determining a device type using an infrared device access protocol.

Device-aware content delivery

A method of operating a portable computing device comprises receiving broadcast information including a data repository and formatting information. Creation of a search query is facilitated, and a search result is retrieved from the data repository based upon the search query. The search result is transformed in accordance with the formatting information to produce formatted content.

System and method for dynamically generating content on a portable computing device

An information distributor comprises a processor, a network receiver connected to the processor, a transceiver system connected to the processor, and a memory connected to the processor. The memory includes network receiver communication stacks configured to direct the network receiver to wirelessly receive information from a system communication network and transceiver protocol stacks configured to direct the transceiver system to wirelessly transmit the information on demand to a portable computing device located within transmission range of the transceiver system. The transceiver protocol stacks include a first module configured to direct the transceiver system to generate a beacon, a second module configured to direct the transceiver system to detect an acknowledgement signal generated, in response to the beacon, by the portable computing device, and a third module configured to direct the transceiver system to generate, in response to the acknowledgement signal, a broadcast incorporating the information.

Apparatus and method for communicating information to portable computing devices

A method of transmitting information to a portable computing device comprises, using a first communication protocol, transmitting a client to the portable computing device. The client configures the portable computing device to communicate with a distributor using a data transfer communication protocol. Using the data transfer communication protocol, the information is transmitted from the distributor to the portable computing device. Transmitting the information includes generating, at the distributor, a polling signal, detecting, at the distributor, an acknowledgement signal generated, in response to the polling signal, by the portable computing device, and generating, in response to the acknowledgement signal, a broadcast signal incorporating the information.

System and method for communicating information from a computerized distributor to portable computing devices

A control mesh of polygonal approximations is generated from one of a variety of conventional object representation schemes. The control mesh is a uniform representation of the object to be rendered comprising edge information and reconstruction data for the polygons comprising the control mesh. Reconstruction data includes surface normal data, and surface hint data. Surface hint data includes information regarding whether a vertex is a sharp point, or whether an edge should be represented as a hard edge. Resolution levels are calculated for all of the vertices of all of the polygons in the control mesh. Resolution levels specify the appropriate level of resolution for a triangle or other polygon responsive to the topology of the object and the camera angle currently being used in the application. Responsive to calculating the resolution levels, the polygons are subdivided responsive to the resolution levels. A data structure is maintained that provides the appropriate subdivision methodology to be used for all cases of T-vertices. After subdivision, locations for the vertices of the new polygons are calculated. If the polygons being generated are triangles, Bezier triangles are used in place of the original triangles to provide a surface rendering that has a greater level of control. The parameters for the Bezier triangles are calculated from the known vertices of the triangles, and the reconstruction data, to provide a detailed, realistic representation of the object.

Curved surface reconstruction

A system for modeling a three dimensional object on a computer system is provided, the system having means for capturing data from an input device, the data representing various points on the surface of the object, means for generating from said captured data a three dimensional model of said object that has first distinct features at predetermined locations on the model, and means for applying a texture map onto said model, the texture having second distinct features at predetermined locations that correspond to the first distinct features of the model, so that a textured model is generated wherein the first distinct features of the texture map are located at approximately the same location as the second distinct features of the model. A method of modeling a three dimensional object is also provided. In addition, a method for mapping a texture map having first distinct features at predetermined locations onto a three dimensional model of an object in a computer system, the model having second distinct features at predetermined locations is provided.
