A new heat sink apparatus and method that simplify the assembly of the heat sink and thermal stud. The new heat sink assembly uses a spring retainer that, in most cases, can use existing socket mounting screws. A spring clip () presses a thermal stud () against the back of an electrical device package (). The present invention is especially useful for attaching a spatial light modulator to a printed circuit board () since it provides a simple, reliable heat sink without blocking the light path to and from the device. Heat sink attachment

A method for removing heat from a spatial light modulator device in a digital projection display by encapsulating the device package in a thermal conductive socket attached to a printed wiring board. The socket wraps around the device package to remove both optically generated heat from the front of the device and electrically generated heat within the device. In higher brightness projector applications, fins are added to the socket to increase the mass and surface area of the socket, thereby improving the heat dissipation properties of the system. The heat sink socket attaches to the printed wiring board using a screw attachment means, which also assures electrical connectivity to the spatial light modulator through a interposer element between the device and spatial light modulator. This approach completely eliminates conventional heat sinks, mounting studs, and fasteners, which have been failure mechanisms in these type displays.

A system and method of aligning a micromirror array to the micromirror package and the micromirror package to a display system. The system and method improve the alignment of the micromirror array to the display system by using a consistent set of precision reference regions. The micromirror package substrate engages an alignment fixture portion of a die mounter during the die mount operation, and a similar fixture when installed in a display system. The package substrate is held by the predefined regions on two edges and the three predefined regions on the top surface. When mounting the device in the package optical techniques may be used for x-y plane alignment. Spring plunger biases the substrate against the contact points on the top surface. In the display system or other end equipment, a socket contacts the same six points to align the device. Precision micromirror positioning

A display system using red, green, blue, and white light. The system derives data for the white portion of a color wheel or a white device from the red, green and blue data. The white portion of the color wheel is controlled as if it were another primary color on the wheel. Errors are prevented by a correction applied if the unfiltered light from the source has a different color temperature than the white light produced using the red, green and blue segments of the color wheel, or the devices for those colors. Analysis is performed on the data to determine if white light is necessary to be added to each frame of data.
