Secure communication with a server can be reestablished after the server's certificate is renewed with a certificate authority unknown to a client. When a server's certificate is renewed with a CA whose certificate does not exist in a client's certificate store, the client will not be able to authenticate the server using SSL unless the CA's certificate is added to the certificate store. When a client is not updated to include the CA's certificate and therefore fails to authenticate the server, a web-based application on the client can perform a fallback authentication process to securely and automatically add any necessary CA certificates to the certificate store thereby eliminating the need for an administrator to manually install the necessary CA certificates.

Cloud based Wake-on-LAN (WoL) for thin clients can be performed to allow a cloud based management server to wake up a thin client prior to an update command (or other communication) being transmitted to the thin client to ensure that the thin client will receive the update command. Cloud based WoL can therefore facilitate the deployment of updates to thin clients by providing a way for the administrator to wake up the thin clients from the cloud.

A method and system for handling a file operation directed to an original file of a protected layer. A protected layer and a user- or device-specific write layer associated with the protected layer are both mounted. File open operations directed to an original file on the protected layer are instead redirected to one of a dummy file associated with the original file or a write-layer copy of the original file located on the write layer. If neither a dummy file nor a write-layer copy of the original file are on the write layer, a dummy file having the same file name and file attributes as the original file is created in the write layer. Subsequent file operations, such as reading, writing, and closing, are directed to the one of the dummy file or the write-layer copy.

System and method for protecting contents of shared layer resources

A file-system filter driver is attached to each cache volume containing a cache and a source volume containing a source file. The file-system filter driver intercepts requests and may redirect the requests to the cache. The redirection may be based on metadata information corresponding to the file or folder associated with a given request. Redirection to the cache prevents an application or user from directly accessing or modifying the source volume, which may be shared among multiple client devices. Redirecting requests to the cache also permits user-specific modifications to be stored in the cache. A merged view of the source volume and the cache may then be presented to the user or an application, reflecting the user-specific modifications without affecting the source volume.

File-based client side cache

User changes may be preserved across updates to a layer. When a layering client mounts a layer, a corresponding layering write cache is mounted. Changes to layered resources, such as files, registry entries, and registry values, are made only to the layering write cache. A request to create a file in the layer is directed to the layering write cache such that the new file is created in the layering write cache. A request to open a layered resource, is directed to the layered resource if the layered resource is in the layering write cache. A request to write to a layered resource is directed to the layering write cache if the layered resource is in the layering write cache. If the layered resource is not in the layering write cache, the layered resource is copied to the layering write cache before redirecting the write request.

Preserving user changes to a shared layered resource

A method of creating a new layer for an information handling system is disclosed. A layering client mounts a new layer at a layer storage medium accessible to the information handling system. A layering file system filter driver redirects a request to create a new file at a target file path to the layer storage medium and updates the file metadata to associate the target file path with the path to file created on the layer storage medium.

System and method of creating layered resources

The present embodiments describe systems and methods for a dynamically updated user data cache for persistent productivity. In an embodiment, the system includes caching mechanism optimized to support user productivity in the case of a primary storage failure. For example, an embodiment of a method includes establishing a cache for caching user data in a persistent data storage device that is accessible by a first operating system and a second operating system. The method may also include identifying a set of user data to be stored in the cache. Additionally, the method may include storing the set of user data into the cache. The method may also include accessing the set of user data stored in the cache with the second operating system in response to the first operating system being in a degraded condition.

In one embodiment, a network boot program is received from a server via a first network interface controller associated with a first network identifier. The network boot program is executed. An operating system loader comprising an operating system driver is received from the server via the first network interface controller. The operating system driver associates the first network interface controller with the second network identifier and associates the second network interface controller with the first network identifier.

System and method for on-demand delivery of operating system and/or applications

The present invention discloses a system and a method for integrated on-demand delivery of operating system and applications, where operating system images are separate and distinct from application images. Integration of operating system streaming and application streaming services makes streaming delivery possible to a wide range of client devices, including those without any local disk space such as thin-clients and diskless workstations. In addition, by integrating the centralized management of operating system delivery and application delivery, the present invention provides a complete solution to server-centric application management, thereby further reducing the total cost of ownership of network-based computing approach. Implementing the operating management functions at the client machine level of specificity and application management functions at the user level of specificity combined with providing separate and distinct operating system images and application images provides an inherently canonical architecture that allows proper scaling and affords appropriate security management functions. The result is a complete, scalable, robust, and reliable server-centric application and operating system management system with a lower total cost of ownership than existing products.
