An image forming apparatus has a plurality of image bearing members which are disposed along the conveying direction of transfer material and on which latent images are formed. Developing devices are disposed corresponding to the plurality of image bearing members and develop the latent images with developers. A transfer material bearing and conveying member and a transfer device to sequentially transfer the developer images developed on the plurality of image bearing members to the transfer material on the transfer material bearing and conveying member are also a part of the image forming apparatus. The apparatus also has a cleaning member which cleans the surface of the transfer material bearing and conveying member. A developer image that is not to be transferred onto the transfer material is formed only onto one image bearing member disposed downstream in the movement direction of the transfer material bearing and conveying member among the plurality of image bearing members. The developer image is transferred onto the transfer material bearing and conveying member by the transfer member and the transfer material bearing and conveying member is moved so that the transferred developer image reaches the cleaning member.

The present invention provides an image forming apparatus comprising an image bearing member, and a recording material bearing member for bearing a recording material to convey the recording material to a transfer station where an image is transferred from the image bearing member onto the recording material borne on the recording material bearing member. The recording material bearing member is capable of bearing a plurality of recording materials simultaneously at different positions thereon. The images can be successively transferred onto first and second surfaces of each recording material, and, when images are formed on the second surfaces of the plurality of recording materials, during a time period in which an area of the recording material bearing member with which the first surface of the recording material was previously contacted is passing through at least the transfer position without bearing the recording material, a spacer particle layer is formed between the image bearing member and the area.

In transferring the image consecutively as above, the number of sheets that the transfer medium bearing member concurrently bears at the final time is greater than the number of transfer media that the transfer medium bearing member concurrently bears at the first time.

This invention relates to an image forming apparatus which has a recording material support member for supporting a recording material and moving therewith, an image forming unit for forming an image on the recording material supported by the recording material support member, and attraction charging devices for electrostatically attracting the recording material to said recording material support member. The attraction charging devices are first and second electrodes positioned across the recording material support member from each other, wherein a center of charging of the first electrode to the recording material support member is shifted from a center of charging of the second electrode, in the moving direction of said recording material support member, and there may also be an auxiliary charger for charging, prior to image formation, the recording material attracted to the recording material support member.
