In an image processing apparatus, an image acquisition unit acquires an image. A correction unit corrects pixel values of pixels composed of the acquired image by using correction coefficients to produce a correct image. An object recognition unit recognizes an object in the corrected image. A storage unit stores in advance standard color characteristics of a predetermined object which is a recognition target. A color characteristics acquisition unit acquires color characteristics of the predetermined object if the predetermined object is recognized by the object recognition unit. A comparison unit compares the color characteristics of the acquired object with the standard color characteristics of the same predetermined object stored in advance in the storage unit. An updating unit updates the correction coefficients used in the correction unit based on a result of comparison so as to reduce a difference between the color characteristics and the standard color characteristics.

A branching and merging determination apparatus includes a recognizer and a determiner. The recognizer recognizes a target present in front of an own vehicle. The determiner determines, based on a result of the recognition of the target by the recognizer, presence or absence of branching and merging of roads. Specifically, the determiner is configured to: estimate a traveling section where branching or merging of roads is probably present; and determine that no branching or merging of roads is present in a region of the estimated traveling section where there is a preceding vehicle traveling at a higher speed than the own vehicle.

In a lane line recognition apparatus, an abnormality determiner is configured to determine whether or not a width of a travel lane defined by left-side and right-side lane lines is abnormal, and a lane-line recognizer is configured to, when the width of the travel lane is not abnormal, recognize both of the left-side and right-side lane lines in a both-side line recognition mode, and when the width of the travel lane is abnormal, recognize one of the lane lines in a one-side line recognition mode. In the one-side line recognition mode, the lane-line recognizer is configured to, for each of the left-side and right-side lane lines, calculate two or more parameters of the lane line, and then integrate recognition results for the respective two or more parameters, and based on the integrated recognition results of the left-side and right-side lane lines, select one of the lane lines to be recognized.

An intersection recognition device installed in a vehicle includes an image acquisition unit that acquires images around the moving vehicle. The device includes an extraction unit that extracts, from the images acquired by the image acquisition unit, a type and a position of at least one traffic marking existing around the vehicle. The device includes a determination unit that determines whether an intersection exists based on the type of the at least one traffic marking extracted by the extraction unit and a relative position relationship between the at least one traffic marking and the vehicle.

In a system for detecting a target object, a similarity determining unit sets a block in a picked-up image, and compares a part of the picked-up image contained in the block with a pattern image data while changes a location of the block in the picked-up image to determine a similarity of each part of the picked-up image contained in a corresponding one of the different-located blocks with respect to the pattern image data. A specifying unit extracts some different-located blocks from all of the different-located blocks. The determined similarity of the part of the picked-up image contained in each of some different-located blocks is equal to or greater than a predetermined threshold similarity. The specifying unit specifies, in the picked-up image, a target area based on a frequency distribution of some different-located blocks therein.

A vehicle-installed obstacle detection apparatus includes a forward-view camera, and processes resultant image data to detect objects as possible obstacles. A size value such as tail lamp spacing, transmitted from a preceding vehicle, and a corresponding size value as measured in a captured image, are used to calculate the distance of the preceding vehicle. This is used together with a height value transmitted from the preceding vehicle and a corresponding height value measured in the captured image, to calculate the relative height difference between the vehicles, which is then used to discriminate between detected objects which are actual obstacles and objects such as road surface markers.

If the first vehicle is concurrently receiving modulated light from both a signal lamp of a traffic light apparatus and a tail lamp of a preceding vehicle, only the information transmitted from the signal lamp is relayed to the second vehicle.
