Photosensitivity of an inner core which is disposed in a central portion of a core is low. Photosensitivity of an outer core which is disposed close to a cladding is high. In the cladding, photosensitivity of the inner cladding which is close to the core is high and photosensitivity of an outer cladding which is outside of the inner cladding is low. A plurality of slant optical fiber grating having different optical characteristics by using the optical fiber having such photosensitivity so as to form a gain equalizing optical filter. By doing this, it is possible to provide an optical filter having a slant optical fiber grating which can maintain a filtering characteristics in a narrow bandwidth and enlarge loss area.

A variable optical fiber grating is provided which is compact, and in which an amount of chromatic dispersion can be effectively varied without changing an operating center wavelength. Also provided is a dispersion compensator, which uses this variable optical fiber grating. The fixing member is formed by providing an outer cylindercomprising a material with a lower coefficient of linear expansion around an inner cylindercomprising a material with a higher coefficient of linear expansion, and an optical fiber grating is fixed in a grooveformed on the inner cylinder. By adjusting the fixing position of the optical fiber grating, an expansion coefficient and contraction coefficient of the optical fiber grating which follows the expansion and contraction of the material with the higher coefficient of linear expansion, differ along the longitudinal direction of the optical fiber grating, so that an amount of chromatic dispersion is controlled.

Variable optical fiber grating and dispersion compensator

There is provided a slant short-period grating which is obtainable by irradiating light onto an optical fiber whose core is formed from quartz glass to which has been doped a photosensitive dopant that changes a refractive index of the quartz glass by light irradiation, and whose clad has one or two or more layers with at least the layer that is adjacent to the core being a photosensitive layer formed from quartz glass to which has been doped a photosensitive dopant that changes a refractive index of the quartz glass by light irradiation. In this slant short-period grating a grating portion is formed by changing the refractive index of the photosensitive layer of the clad and the core at a predetermined grating period along a longitudinal direction of the optical fiber by a predetermined slant angle. The diameter of the core is set to 5 &mgr;m or more, and the relative photosensitivity ratio of the core relative to the photosensitive layer of the clad that is adjacent to the core is designed so as to satisfy a predetermined formula. As a result, in the wavelength spectrum of transmitted light, loss peaks are obtained in a narrow frequency band.

Slant short-period grating

The invention provides a method and apparatus that precisely and efficiently improves the optical properties of an optical fiber grating. Preferably hydrogen loading processing, grating formation processing that forms a grating part by irradiation with ultraviolet light at a predetermined period, and preferably dehydrogenation, adjusting the optical properties by a suitable combination of uniform ultraviolet irradiation processing that irradiates the grating part as a whole with ultraviolet light and heat trimming processing, and finally heat aging is carried out.

A fiber type optical component in which nonuniform increase of refractive index is restricted to a minimum in an optical fiber to which light sensitive material is added to the cladding section and the cladding section of the optical fiber, by forming the optical fiber such that the outermost diameter of the light sensitive layer of the optical fiber is twice as large as the mode field diameter or more, or more preferably 2.5 times as large as the mode field diameter, and by forming slant type optical fiber grating by this optical fiber, it is possible to realize the fiber type optical component in which the bandwidth of transmittance loss is narrow and steep in the reflection restricting angle with filtering ability having large transmittance loss.

Fiber type optical component

An optical waveguide grating with radiative mode-coupling properties, with exceptional stability and reliability as an optical component, wherein the central wavelength of the rejection band has a low temperature dependence, due to the use of silica glass doped with germanium and boron for the core. The rejection bandwidth can be narrowed without increasing the grating length by forming the radiative mode-coupled optical waveguide grating in an optical waveguide wherein the mean relative refractive index difference of the core is greater than that of optical communication waveguides. The rejection can be increased by reducing the occurrence of cases wherein propagation modes of the core coupled to cladding modes once again couple to the core in palnar optical waveguide gratings formed by making periodic changes in the waveguide structure along the direction of propagation of light in an optical waveguide having a cladding with a lower refractive index than the core surrounding the core, by making the thickness of the cladding at least thirteen times the thickness of the core.

Core comprises a main stem which is formed on a substrate, linearly extending in the beam propagating direction and short branches with a certain length which extend perpendicularly to the beam propagating direction toward both sides along the plane of the substrate and are arranged at regular intervals in the beam propagating direction. Thus, the branches are arranged in a ladder geometry when it is viewed from the top, forming a rectangular waveform arrangement. The core constitutes a grating structure in which the width of the core is made to vary periodically with the branches in the beam propagating direction.

The present invention relates to an optical fiber filter provided with a portion which selectively reflects or transmits light of a specific wavelength, this portion comprised of a multimode optical fiber in which the refractive index of the core changes periodically along the longitudinal direction thereof. Furthermore, this multimode optical fiber has an input end and an output end, with at least the input end of the multimode optical fiber being connected to a single mode optical fiber. As a result of forming an optical fiber filter in this way, it is possible to realize an optical fiber filter that exhibits no transmission loss at wavelengths other than the center wavelength.
