In one embodiment, a liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate having a first pixel electrode and a first pillar-shaped spacer arranged in an active area, and a second pixel electrode and a second pillar-shaped spacer arranged in a shield area surrounding the active area. A shield layer is formed in the shape of a belt crossing above the first pillar-shaped spacer in the active area and extending to the shield area including a portion above the second pillar-shaped spacer. The height of a first seat layer formed above the first pillar-shaped spacer and including the shield layer, a first color filter layer and an overcoat layer is substantially the same as that of a second seat layer formed above the second pillar-shaped spacer and including the shield layer, a second color filter layer and the overcoat layer.

Liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display device includes an array substrate, a counter-substrate which is disposed to be opposed to the array substrate, a liquid crystal layer which is formed of a liquid crystal material which is held between the array substrate and the counter-substrate, and a sealant which bonds the array substrate and the counter-substrate. The array substrate includes a pixel electrode having a slit, and a counter-electrode which is opposed to the pixel electrode via an interlayer insulation film. The counter-substrate has a shield electrode on an outer surface thereof. The shield electrode is disposed such that an end portion thereof along at least one side of the counter-substrate, is exposed on the outer surface of the counter-substrate.

A liquid crystal display device includes an active area which is composed of pixels arrayed in a matrix, and a light-shield area surrounding the active area. The liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate including pixel electrodes disposed in the respective pixels, a second substrate including color filters disposed in the respective pixels, and a counter-electrode which is disposed to cover the color filters and extends from the active area to at least a part of the light-shield area, and a liquid crystal layer held between the first substrate and the second substrate. The pixel electrode and the color filter of the pixel, which is disposed at an end portion of the active area, extend into the light-shield area beyond a boundary between the active area and the light-shield area.

In a liquid crystal panel in which pseudo dot inversion driving is performed, the occurrence of flicker or vertical and horizontal strings is prevented by preventing an alignment shift between individual layers during the fabrication of a TFT array from producing a difference between the respective abilities of thin-film TFTs to charge adjacent pixels (). For this purpose, the liquid crystal display panel is constructed such that two TFTs which are enclosed by two adjacent image signal lines () and scan signal lines () and adjacent to each other along the signal lines () have respective source electrodes () adjacent to the different image signal lines (). The source electrodes () and drain electrodes () of the two TFTs connected to the adjacent pixels () are alternately arranged such that variations caused by the alignment shift in the sizes and areas of overlapping portions between the individual layers of the TFTs are equal or the same.

Liquid crystal device

The liquid crystal display device having an array substrate () provided with a pixel electrode () disposed in a region defined by two adjacent gate wirings () and two adjacent source wirings (), a switching element () for switching a voltage applied to the pixel electrode () from the source wiring () based on a signal volume fed from the gate wiring (), a common wiring () formed between the two adjacent gate wirings (), a common electrode () being electrically connected to the common wiring () and generating an electric field between the common electrode () and the pixel electrode () for driving the liquid crystal, and a storage capacity electrode () electrically connected to the common wiring (), wherein the common wiring () and the storage capacity electrode () are layered so as to hold at least some part of the pixel electrode () in between through insulating layers ().

Liquid crystal display device having additional storage capacitance

A liquid crystal display panel of the invention is such that, in a pixel region defined by a region of the array substrate surrounded by a pair of image signal lines and a pair of scanning signal lines, of a line-shaped pixel electrode and a common electrode, the electrode that is disposed adjacent to and parallel to a signal line is made of an opaque conductor and at least one of the other electrodes is made of a transparent conductor. Adverse effects of the electric field formed between a signal line and an adjacent electrode thereto are suppressed and a sufficient aperture ratio is ensured by using a transparent conductor for the electrode contributing good display.

LCD panel

A liquid crystal display comprises an array substrate in which a common electrode, a pixel electrode, a scanning signal line, a video signal line and a semiconductor switching element are provided, an opposed substrate, and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the array substrate and opposed substrate. The line width of at least either the common electrode or the pixel electrode is larger than the distance between the common electrode and the pixel electrode. The film thickness of at least one of the common electrode and the pixel electrode is larger than the thickness of at least either the scanning signal line or the video signal line. As a result, an inplane electric field liquid crystal display having a wide viewing angle, high-speed response, and high image quality such as high luminance is provided.

Liquid crystal display with special electrode configurations and compositions and method for producing the same

A liquid crystal display comprises an array substrate in which a common electrode, a pixel electrode, a scanning signal line, a video signal line and a semiconductor switching element are provided, an opposed substrate, and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the array substrate and opposed substrate. The line width of at least either the common electrode or the pixel electrode is larger than the distance between the common electrode and the pixel electrode. The film thickness of at least one of the common electrode and the pixel electrode is larger than the thickness of at least either the scanning signal line or the video signal line. As a result, an in-plane electric field liquid crystal display having a wide viewing angle, high-speed response, and high image quality such as high luminance is provided.

Liquid crystal display with opaque common electrodes over the video signal lines and fabrication method thereof

A liquid crystal display unit including a plurality of subpixels in each pixel provides superior gradation over a wide viewing angle, and is produced with no increase in manufacturing cost and no deterioration of desired properties (such as reduction in brightness, contrast and response). No additional manufacturing step is required since a control capacitor electrode is formed at the same time as source and drain electrodes constituting a thin-film transistor. By controlling the ratio of display area and the difference in applied voltage of the subpixels, preferable viewing angle properties are obtained. The display properties at the boundary of subpixels are improved by controlling the gap width and the direction of boundary of the subpixels, thus providing a bright display.

Liquid crystal display unit with a plurality of subpixels

In an active matrix liquid crystal display, common electrodes and pixel electrodes are respectively formed parallel to each other and have substantially herringbone shapes. Areas of first display regions formed between the common electrodes and the pixel electrodes and disposed at one side of the inflection points of the herringbone shapes are substantially the same as those of second display regions disposed at the other side. When electric fields substantially parallel to surface of an array substrate are applied between the pixel electrodes and the common electrodes, orientations of liquid crystal molecules in the first and second display regions move in opposite directions. Coloring of image corresponding to angle of view due to the movement of the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules is compensated.
