A means capable of supplying exhaust gas sufficiently imitating exhaust gas from actual diesel engines is provided. A PM generating apparatus has a constitution in which combustion air supplied to the space between a chassis and an outer casing via an air inlet is introduced into the space between the outer casing and an inner casing via through-holes of the outer casing, and a fuel injected by an fuel-injection means into the space between the chassis and the outer casing is introduced into the space between the outer casing and the inner casing via the through-holes of the outer casing, wherein the fuel is combusted to generate PM.

An electrostatic chuck is provided, having an insulation layer including a mount plane on which a wafer is mounted, an inner electrode provided in the insulation layer, and projecting portions protruding from the mount plane which include contact planes that contact the wafer. A backside gas flows into a space defined by the mount plane, the projecting portions, and the wafer under such a condition that the wafer is attracted to the mount plane so as to maintain the temperature uniformity of the wafer. Ceramic sintered bodies having a different thickness along a predetermined axial direction are manufactured in the following manner. At first, a ceramic formed body to be sintered having different thickness along the predetermined axial direction is accommodated in a hot press apparatus. An upper forming mold and a lower forming mold each having a forming surface corresponding to an upper surface and a lower surface of the ceramic formed body to be sintered are set. A pressure along the predetermined axial direction is applied to the ceramic formed body to be sintered via the upper forming mold and the lower forming mold while heating the ceramic formed body to be sintered to perform a hot press sintering thereof. A thickness of a ceramic sintered body is controlled in such a manner that a maximum thickness in the predetermined direction is not more than two times a minimum thickness in the predetermined direction.

Method of manufacturing ceramic sintered bodies

Ceramic sintered bodies having a different thickness along a predetermined axial direction are manufactured in the following manner. At first, a ceramic formed body to be sintered having different thickness along the predetermined axial direction is accommodated in a hot press apparatus. An upper forming mold and a lower forming mold each having a forming surface corresponding to an upper surface and a lower surface of the ceramic formed body to be sintered are set. A pressure along the predetermined axial direction is applied to the ceramic formed body to be sintered via the upper forming mold and the lower forming mold while heating the ceramic formed body to be sintered to perform a hot press sintering thereof. A thickness of a ceramic sintered body in such a manner that a maximum thickness in the predetermined direction is not two times larger or more than a minimum thickness in the predetermined direction.

A process is disclosed for determining a pressure loss of exhaust gas purification honeycomb structural bodies to be inspected, at a point of time when the honeycomb structural body is to be regenerated, said honeycomb structural body having a number of through holes alternatively sealed at opposite end faces, comprising the steps of: (1) flowing particles through each of exhaust gas purification honeycomb structural bodies of a given type in an axial direction of the through holes thereof, (2) determining a relationship between the pressure loss of the exhaust gas purification honeycomb structural body at a point of time when the honeycomb structural body catches a given amount of the particles and the pressure loss of the honeycomb structural body at a point of time when the honeycomb structural body catches the particles in such an amount suitable for the regeneration, (3) then measuring the pressure loss of a honeycomb structural body to be inspected, at a point of time when the honeycomb structural body to be inspected catches said given amount of the particles, and (4) based on the thus measured pressure loss, presuming the pressure loss at a point of time suitable for the regeneration thereof with reference to the relationship determined above. An apparatus is also disclosed to effect the above process.

A means for converting an oxidizing gas-flow and/or a fuel gas-flow into turbulent flow is provided in the internal space and/or the external space. The converting means is preferably an elongated body such as a tube-shaped body, a solid pillar-shaped body, a hollow-cylindrical body, a solid-cylindrical body and a rod with plates, extending in the longitudinal direction of the element.

Method of manufacturing one-end closed ceramic double tube

A one-end closed ceramic double tube has an integral structure comprising: a one-end closed outer cylinder; an inner cylinder extending concentrically with said outer cylinder; and at least one support portion extending laterally to bridge said outer and inner cylinders and longitudinally from near the closed end at least up to the open end of said outer cylinder, wherein the ratio of a total thickness of the support portions in contact with the inner circumference of the outer cylinder to the inner circumference of the outer cylinder at cross section is most 25%, and preferably, the outside diameter ratio of the outer cylinder to the inner cylinder is at most 3.3. This double tube is manufactured by means of extrusion molding.

A method of inspecting an alternately sealed honeycomb structural body is provided which can quickly, efficiently and accurately inspect presence of defects of the honeycomb structural body. The method comprises, flowing particulates in axial direction of the throughholes from one end surface to the other end surface of the honeycomb structural body, catching the particulates on a gas-permeable screen intimately mounted on the other end surface to form a figure of the particulates, and checking the figure to inspect for defects at internal partition walls and sealing portions of the honeycomb structural body.
