A numerical control device for compound machine tool has an interactive facility software to enable a working program and various sorts of data to be input in an interactive form. With the interactive facility software, various sorts of data such as a tool compensation amount required for a working operation and a work coordinate system can be read at any time by accessing to a memory storing a lathe turning control software and a milling control software.

A machining limit area specifying method and a manual feed machining method using a numerical control unit capable of easily performing machining in a desired shape by manual feed. In specifying a machining limit area on an X-Y plane, a desired machining shape is defined by shaping data or a combination of some shaping data on the X-Y plane at a predetermined Z-coordinate, and the desired machining shape defined by the shaping data is specified as a machining limit area in which movement of a tool is permitted on the X-Y plane in manual machining using the numerical control unit. In specifying a machining limit area in the Z-axis direction, an inverse function using an X- or Y-coordinate value as a parameter is obtained based on a function for specifying the machining limit area on the X-Y plane on condition that a Z-coordinate value is used as a parameter, and the machining limit area in the Z-axis direction is specified based on the inverse function.

In a state where definition of machining has been already finished for the first to N-th processes, such data as a machining kind, tool data including a tool code, and cutting conditions related to the j-th process (1.ltoreq.j.ltoreq.N+1) are inputted as new data or modified data in an interactive mode on a screen. Next, a shape of the workpiece at a point of time when the (j-1)th machining process has been finished and the final shape of the workpiece to be cut are displayed on a screen, and a cutting area for the j-th machining process is set or modified by means of the screen. Then, a shape of the workpiece at a point of time when the j-th process is finished is found on the basis of the inputted data, and a cutting area to be newly cut or to be modified in the j-th machining process is identified and displayed by displaying one upon the other on the screen the found shape of the workpiece and a shape of the workpiece at a point of time when the (j-1)th process has been finished. The user decides whether the identified and displayed cutting area is adequate or not, and in the case where there is no remaining uncut part or a suitable remaining uncut part, the inputted data is determined and registered as data for machining for the j-th machining process.

A contour configuration machining system of an interactive numerical control apparatus is provided for carrying out a machining operation by a lathe by programming a predetermined contour configuration based on configuration data of straight lines, arcs and the like. A cutting direction (9) is independently set on a display (1) for each of the above configuration data and the machining operation is carried out by moving a tool according to the set cutting direction, whereby the machining efficiency is improved when a configuration composed of a series of contours is to be machined.
