A machine tool includes: a main spindle adapted to be rotatable with a workpiece chucked thereby; a tool spindle capable of moving in directions of three axes perpendicular to each other and capable of pivoting about one of the axes, the axis being perpendicular to the main spindle; an automatic tool changer adapted to detachably attach a first tool and a chucking unit to the tool spindle, the first tool being used for machining the workpiece chucked by the main spindle, the chucking unit being used for chucking the workpiece; and a tool post having a second tool mounted thereon, the second tool being used for machining the workpiece chucked by the chucking unit attached to the tool spindle.

According to one embodiment, a machine tool for machining a workpiece includes: a main spindle that holds the workpiece to rotate the workpiece around a axis; a tool that is configured to machine the workpiece by working together with the main spindle; a headstock that rotatably supports the main spindle and includes a leading-edge portion and a base-end portion; and a bed that supports the headstock by a sliding bearing at the leading-edge portion and rolling bearings at two points of the base-end portion so that the headstock is movable along an axial line of the main spindle, wherein the two points of the base-end portion are spaced apart from each other in a direction orthogonal to the axial line of the main spindle.

A movement control apparatus for a moving member, includes: a drive unit that moves a moving member by rapid traverse on a first axis and a second axis intersecting the first axis, and overlaps the rapid traverse movements in the two axis directions to thereby allow the moving member to move around the periphery of a given area; a reference arc setting unit that sets a reference arc inscribed in the first and second axes; a timing setting unit that sets an overlap movement start timing for the rapid traverse of the moving member based on the reference arc when switching the moving member from the first axis to the second axis; and a control unit that controls the operation of the drive unit to move the moving member at a timing set by the timing setting unit.

A cutting-off method of an automatic lathe, comprising steps of applying a front working to a bar material by a front working tool with the bar material chucked by a main spindle rotatably supported by a headstock and with a top end of the bar material supported by a guide bush, applying a cutting-off by a cut-off tool after completion of the front working with the top end of the bar material chucked and rotatively driven by a sub spindle rotatably supported by a rear headstock, and simultaneously releasing the bar material chucked by the main spindle so that the headstock may rearwardly move to a working start position to be ready for the next working.

Cutting-off method of an automatic lathe and an automatic lathe

An automatic lathe includes a pair of gang tool posts disposed on opposite sides of a headstock. The headstock has a main spindle and is movable axially of the main spindle, and the pair of gang tool posts are independently movable in respective two directions perpendicular to each other and perpendicular to the axial direction. Pitches between work tools on one of the gang tool posts differ from pitches between work tools on the other gang tool post such that when a free-end position of an arbitrary work tool of a first gang tool post is aligned with that of an arbitrary work tool of a second gang tool post, free-end positions of the other work tools of the first gang tool post mutually differ from those of the other work tools of the second gang tool post. To ensure simultaneous machining of the front face of one workpiece and the back face of another workpiece respectively using front and rear work tools, the front work tools are mounted on a rear headstock and the rear work tools are mounted on one of the pair of gang tool posts.
