An image displaying apparatus is capable of maintaining the contrast ratios of displayed images even if the f-value of an optical system of the apparatus is lowered to provide bright images, efficiently utilizing a beam from a light source, minimizing the size and weight of the optical system, and being easy to manufacture. The image displaying apparatus includes first to third reflective polarizing plates () provided for first to third reflective spatial light modulators (), respectively. The reflective polarizing plates polarize and separate beams to be injected into the reflective spatial light modulators. In the image displaying apparatus, a color separating optical system has a larger effective diameter than a color composition prism ().

Image displaying apparatus and color separating-combining optical system

A projection display apparatus that is lightweight and provides bright, high quality images is provided. The projection display apparatus comprising a color separation and synthesis optical system, that performs color synthesis, generating an image, after separating light of the three primary colors of determined polarities into the respective three colors, and modulating those three color lights in relation to respective image signals therefor, and a projection lens. The color separation and synthesis optical systemcomprises polarized light separating meansanddisposed in respective diagonal directions therein and reflecting spatial light modulating elementsanddisposed to perform light modulation coordinated to an image signal for each respective color, for light separated according to polarization by the four polarized light separating means. An optical device has a light-transmitting optical substrate formed with a multilayer film and a barrier layer disposed on the multilayer film side thereof. The light-transmitting optical substrate has a refractive index N (at a reference wavelength of 632.8 nm) falling within the range of 1.7&lE;N &lE;1.9, whereas the barrier layer has a refractive index N (at a reference wavelength of 632.8 nm) falling within the range of &minus;0.1&lE;N &minus;N &lE;0.1.

A color separating/light guiding optics comprises two independent dichroic mirrors, reflection mirrors and correcting lenses. A horizontal plane region occupied by these optical components is entirely involved in a horizontal plane region occupied by a light modulating/color compositing/image projecting optics. A red beam is guided along a detoured optical path extending across a dead space below a projection lens. Although the optical path length of the red beam becomes longer than those of the blue beam and the green beam, the detoured optical path provides a sufficient space for installing the correcting lenses. The substantial optical path lengths of three primary color beams can be equalized with each other by the provision of these correcting lenses.

The present invention provides a video projector equipped with a projection lens system having only one optical axis for projecting a plurality color images displayed on a plurality of CRTs. The color images displayed on the CRTs 2R, 2B and 2G are respectively focused onto a writing side of respective spatial light modulators 4R, 4G and 4B through a plurality of writing lens 3R, 3G and 3B. On the other hand, a light from a reading light source 5 is divided into 3-color lights of R, G and B by a cross-type 3-color separation member 25. The three color lights are respectively inputted into a reading side of the respective spatial light modulators through a plurality of polarization beam splitter blocks 26R, 26G and 26B each having a pair of dielectric multiple layers 26a, 26b disposed parallel to each other. A plurality of reading light outputted from the spatial light modulators are synthesized and outputted as a composite color light by a cross-type 3-color composition member 28 so as to be projected with a magnification onto a screen by the projection lens system.
