This invention relates to a pearlescent pigment, which is composed of flaky alumina substrate particles produced by a hydrothermal process and coat layers formed on the flaky substrate particles and composed of at least one metal oxide including at least a titanium oxide. The metal oxide has an average particle size of from 1 to 500 nm. According to this invention, it is possible to provide a pearlescent pigment, which has wholly uniform photoluminescence and an elegant and silky feel in combination and can fully satisfy artistry as desired.

Pearlescent pigment, process for producing the same, coating composition and multilayered coat

A C.I. Pigment Yellow 74 as an insoluble azo pigment is provided. This C.I. Pigment Yellow 74 is crystalline particles. The ratio (26.6&#xb0;/11.7&#xb0;) of a diffraction intensity of a peak at 26.6&#xb0; to a diffraction intensity of a peak at 11.7&#xb0; in terms of Bragg angle (2&#x3b8;&#xb1;0.2&#xb0;) as measured by powder X-ray diffraction using CuK &#x3b1;-radiation is 0.85 to 1.12, and the average primary particle size is 20 to 130 nm. The use of this C.I. Pigment Yellow 74 as a colorant in a coloring composition enables to provide the coloring composition with excellent dispersibility and good particle size stability and storage stability compared with conventional pigments. The use of this coloring composition enables the formation (recording) of images having excellent clarity and transparency of such high levels that have not been achievable by conventional technologies.

Described is a coating composition comprising a liquid medium containing a titanium dioxide pigment and a coating film formation resin said titanium dioxide pigment being in the form of flaky or fin-like small pieces of silicon dioxide covered by titanium dioxide and having a diameter of 1 to 300 microns and a thickness of 0.001 to 1 micron, a considerable portion of said silicon dioxide being dissolved out from said titanium dioxide-coated silicon dioxide small pieces.
