Method and apparatus automatically select, in a playback mode, a noise reduction circuitry of a noise reduction system by which a middle-to-high frequency signal of a low level included in a recording signal is compressed in dynamic range for recording and the compressed middle-to-high frequency signal is expanded in dynamic range in the playback mode, thereby suppressing middle to high frequency noises in the reproduction signal. A level difference .DELTA.L between the maximum and minimum signals of the low frequency component in the reproduction signal and a level difference .DELTA.H between the maximum and minimum signals of the middle-to-high frequency component in the reproduction signal are obtained. While comparing the magnitudes of the two level differences obtained, the selection of an appropriate noise reduction circuitry is performed so that the two level differences are made almost equal to each other.

Method and apparatus for automatically selecting a noise reduction

A frequency control system in an audio system has a low frequency band pass filter for deriving a low frequency component from an audio signal obtained from the audio system, and a high frequency band pass filter for deriving a high frequency component. A comparator is provided for comparing the level of the high frequency component with the level of the low frequency component, thereby producing a deviation of the high frequency component from a l/f fluctuation. The audio signal is corrected with a correcting value to the l/f fluctuation dependent on the deviation.

A novel cassette changer for a tape player wherein a tape cassette accommodating member and a tape driving mechanism are fixed relative to each other during selection of a tape cassette and which has a comparatively small overall size and requires a comparatively low power for moving a tape cassette between the tape cassette accommodating member and tape driving mechanism. The cassette changer comprises a plurality of cassette receiving members each for removably receiving a tape cassette thereon, an accommodating member for receiving the cassette receiving members in a row thereon, an actuating means for selectively moving a cassette receiving members from a home position to a transfer position, a tape driving mechanism mounted in a fixed relationship with respect to the accommodating member for receiving a tape cassette thereon and driving a tape of the tape cassette, and a carrier for receiving a tape cassette from the selected cassette receiving member moved to the transfer position and setting the tape cassette in position onto the tape driving mechanism.
