Substrate for CVD deposition of diamond and method for the preparation thereof

This invention provides a composite product and an effective method for producing the same, based on an SHS or intense heat producing process. Said composite essentially comprises either (1) one or more skeletal structures of three dimensionally joined pieces of at least one ceramic material selected from carbide, boride, nitride and silicide of titanium, zirconium, tantalum, niobium, silicon, chromium, tungsten, and molybdenum, and metallic material of alloy and/or intermetallic compound which fills the gaps within each and between adjacent skeletal structures, or (2) a matrix consisting of SHS products of metallic and/or ceramic substances, and particles of superabrasive selected from diamond and high pressure polymorphism of boron nitride, which are held and distributed in the matrix in the whole, in the surface or surface area comprising the portion corresponding to the end working face. Also effective is the use of superabrasive particles coated with metallic and/or non-metallic materials by some specific techniques.

Sintered cermet materials far tools such as cutting tools, which are excellent in heat resistance, wear resistance and fracture resistance, are inexpensive, and have long life time, and a method for producing such sintered cermet materials. The sintered cermet materials for tools are composed of sintered bodies which are obtained by preparing a mixed powder containing powders of TiCN, Si N , Al O , CrxN (x&equals;1-2.7 and ZrN, at least one powder of W and WC, and at least one kind of metal powder selected from the group consisting of Co, Ni, Ta and Mo, and sintering the mixed powder .

A superabrasive containing layered composite is provided which comprises a substrate block consisting of either ceramic material and metallic or several metallic materials, and a superabrasive containing body adjacent said substrate block. The superabrasive contains superabrasive particles, and a metallic ingredient which is distributed in the superabrasive containing layer, including a working surface. The superabrasive material may be formed using a compression cell wherein the compression cell comprises a die defined by a vertical wall and a flat closed bottom. Placed in the die, in order from bottom upward, comprises a formed pallet of single body or layers of mixed powder forming a refractory compound, a material mass of a working layer containing diamond particles, a mass of ignition material comprising an SHS composition, and an electrical heating element.

Diamond-containing stratified composite material and method of manufacturing the same

An aspect of this invention is an electrode rod for spark alloying, comprising a compact of a first powder of a first component which comprises a metal selected from a group of Fe, Co, Ni, metals of 4 , 5 and 6 of the periodic table and Si, and a second powder of a second component which is capable of self-propagating high temperature synthesis to form with said first component carbide, nitride, boride, silicide or intermetallic compound, said first and second powders being mixed intimately with each other and formed into an axial rod. Another aspect is a method for the production of the electrospark alloying rod, comprising: mixing intimately a first powder of first component and a second powder of second component, said first component comprising at least one selected from Fe, Co, Ni, metals of groups 4 , 5 and 6 , Sn, Zn, Pb, Al and Cu, said second component comprising materials capable of SHS process to form a refractory (or intermetallic) compound, compressing said mixture, followed or not by further firing, and thereby forming an axial body with a bulk density 0.50 to 0.86 time the theoretical values for the corresponding substances. Still another aspect is a method for the deposition of a coating on a work by causing and holding an electric spark between said electrode rod and work, whereby transferring the materials of said first and second components to the surface of said work, and depositing thereon as a layer or more layers of such compound.

The principal objects of the invention is to provide diamond fine particles with a surface nature so improved as to form a stable, uniform suspension or dispersion in a common medium such as water and alcohol. Another object is to provide an effective technique for producing hydrophilic diamond fine particles by chemically modifying the particle surface nature, while removing at the same time contaminants and foreign materials which coexist with the diamond. In the invention, diamond particles are treated by boiling in the treatment fluid of sulfuric acid solution, which is in particular of concentrated or fuming nature, at a temperature more than 200&deg; C., which is preferably 250&deg; C. or more.

Sintered composites containing superabrasive particles

The invention provides a superabrasive containing composite product, comprising and/or prepared on the intense heating of an SHS process, self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. An effective method of such product is also provided. Said composite comprises a substrate of shaped metallic block and a functional layer of ceramic materials containing superabrasive particles, which is joined on a surface of the former, by means of and intermediated by molten metal which occurred during the SHS process.

Super-abrasive grain-containing composite material and method of making

A method is provided for efficiently producing an entirely quality-controlled CVD diamond. A CVD process is interrupted at an early stage and the deposit is taken out of the reaction chamber, before a significant mass is accumulated, and is inspected by means of cathodoluminescence. The spectrum are compared with a given reference in terms of peak position, half width and 20%-value width in coordination. The observed deviation allows to determine whether to maintain or alter the settings. A diamond substance of acceptable quality which is properly specified in terms of the CL parameters is also provided.

Making a diamond substance exhibiting a cathodoluminescence spectrum with the peak at a photon energy greater than 2.8 eV (electron volt), the half-value and 20%-value width not exceeding 0.5 eV and 0.8 eV, respectively, comprising: providing a substrate in a closed chamber, introducing a matrix gas comprising H.sub.2 and one selected from hydrocarbon and CO to said chamber, exciting the gas to create a plasma while heating said substrate to a temperature of at least 700.degree. C. and, thus, causing deposition and growth of diamond substance which is crystallographically diamond, controlling parameters of the deposition by means of the cathodoluminescence record and recovering the diamond substance from the chamber.

Diamond abrasive comprising a mass of idiomorphic crystal grits which each have an irregular shaped core of diamond formed under pressure where diamond is thermodynamically favored phase, and a growth layer of diamond and/or diamond-like carbon formed over said core by chemical vapor deposition.
