A vehicle includes a gas turbine engine having at least two spools and an associated power system. The power system includes two independent power subsystems, including a first power subsystem for managing power transfer between spools and a second power subsystem for supplying a base power load to the vehicle. The first power subsystem has a first electric machine mechanically coupled with a first spool of the gas turbine engine and a second electric machine mechanically coupled with a second spool. The second electric machine is electrically coupled with the first electric machine such that electrical power is transmittable therebetween. The second power subsystem has a third electric machine mechanically coupled with one of the spools. The third electric machine is electrically coupled with a load positioned offboard the gas turbine engine. The first power subsystem and the second power subsystem are electrically decoupled from one another.

Electrical power system for a vehicle

A magnetic unit is presented. The magnetic unit includes a magnetic core. The magnetic core includes a first limb and a second limb disposed proximate to the first limb, where a gap is formed between the first limb and the second limb. The magnetic unit further includes a first winding wound on the first limb. Moreover, the magnetic unit includes a conductive element disposed facing an outer periphery of the first winding, where the conductive element is configured to control a fringing flux generated at the gap. Further, the magnetic unit includes a heat sink operatively coupled to the conductive element, where the conductive element is further configured to transfer heat from at least one of the conductive element and the first winding to the heat sink. Moreover, a high frequency power conversion system and a method of operation of the magnetic unit is also presented.

Magnetic unit and an associated method thereof

An electrical power unit is disclosed. The electrical power unit includes a controller configured to generate a first control signal based on a first operational state of an engine, a multiphase electrical machine including a plurality of three-phase windings; and an electrical power conditioning subunit operatively coupled to the controller, where the electrical power conditioning subunit comprises a plurality of converters, where at least one converter is electrically coupled to a corresponding three-phase winding of the plurality of three-phase windings based on the first control signal, and where the electrical power conditioning subunit is configured to transmit a first electrical power from the at least one converter to the corresponding three-phase winding, where the multiphase electrical machine is configured to generate a mechanical power based on the first electrical power and rotate a crankshaft operatively coupled to the engine based on the generated mechanical power to start the engine.

Systems and methods for rotating a crankshaft to start an engine

A power distribution system in operative association with a source and a plurality of loads includes a converter, a power distribution unit including a plurality of solid state power controllers and configured to provide power from converter to plurality of loads, and a fault protection unit operatively coupled to converter, power distribution unit, or both. The fault protection unit includes a sensor configured to sense current at output terminal of at least one of power distribution unit and converter and a controller configured to compare sensed current with a corresponding threshold value of current, identify presence of a fault in at least one of plurality of loads, power distribution unit, and converter based on comparison, and activate a desired protection scheme to provide fault ride through during the presence of the fault.

System and method for fault ride through

A filtering unit is presented. The filtering unit includes at least two operational amplifiers, where each of the at least two operational amplifiers includes an input end and an output end, where the input end of one operational amplifier is coupled across the corresponding input end of another operational amplifier of the at least two operational amplifiers. The filtering unit also includes a direct current link operatively coupled to the at least two operational amplifiers and at least one thermoelectric module, where each thermoelectric module includes a conducting layer, where the direct current link and at least one of the at least two operational amplifiers are operatively coupled to the at least one thermoelectric module. A filtering system is also presented.

Filtering system and an associated method thereof

Systems and methods related to controlling flux through an inductor of a power converter are described. For example, a control system is configured to control a multi-level converter having a first leg, a second leg, and at least one inductor. The control system includes a processor operatively coupled to a memory. The processor receives a reference signal. The processor determine flux through at least one inductor of a converter. The processor controls a temporal distribution of the flux through the at least one inductor based on the flux through the at least one inductor according to the reference signal.

Direct flux control power converter

A direct current circuit breaker includes main circuit for carrying a main-path current, and a transient circuit for carrying a transient-path current. The main circuit includes a first solid state switch and a main contactor. The first solid state switch is coupled in series with the main contactor. The transient circuit is coupled in parallel with the main circuit. The transient circuit includes an auxiliary contactor coupled in series with a second solid state switch. The second solid state switch closes when the main-path current exceeds a first threshold. The first solid state switch then opens. The main contactor opens when the main-path current falls below a second threshold. Then the second solid state switch opens. The auxiliary contactor opens when the transient-path current falls below the second threshold and after the second solid state switch opens.

DC circuit breaker and method of use

A detecting unit is presented. The detecting unit includes a flexible circuit having a first side and a second side opposite the first side. The flexible circuit includes a plurality of cells defined therein, each of the plurality of cells having a first side and a second side respectively corresponding to the first side and the second side of the flexible circuit. Moreover, the flexible circuit includes a plurality of conductive windings disposed on at least one of the first and second sides of the plurality of cells. Further, the flexible circuit includes a stress reduction feature between each of the plurality of cells. Also, the detecting unit includes a sealing element configured to secure the flexible circuit in a stacked configuration. A sensing system and a method of making a detecting unit are also presented.

Current sensing system

An electrical machine is provided. The electrical machine includes a stator, a rotor, and a plurality of switches. The stator includes main windings and auxiliary windings. The rotor is couplable to a prime mover configured to turn the rotor relative to the stator to generate at least six phases of alternating current (AC) power at the main windings. The plurality of switches is respectively coupled between the auxiliary windings and groups of the main windings. The plurality of switches is configured to convert the at least six phases to three phases when the plurality of switches is closed.

Multiphase electrical machine and method of use

Lighting systems having unique configurations are provided. For instance, the lighting system may include a light source, a thermal management system and driver electronics, each contained within a housing structure. The light source is configured to provide illumination visible through an opening in the housing structure. The thermal management system is configured to provide an air flow, such as a unidirectional air flow, through the housing structure in order to cool the light source. The driver electronics are configured to provide power to each of the light source and the thermal management system.

A circuit breaker device includes plural bridges conductively coupled parallel to each other between plural terminals that are configured to be conductively coupled with a power source and a load. The bridges include first and second outer bridges each having plural switches and at least an impedance bridge. The switches of the first and second outer bridges are configured to be closed to conduct electric current between the power source and the load and at least one switch in each of the first and second outer bridges are configured to be opened while at least one other switch in each of the first and second outer bridges are configured to remain closed to prevent conduction of the electric current between the power source and the load and to direct the electric current into the impedance bridge.

Circuit breaker system and method

An electric motor is configured with a stator core assembly that includes a stator core having a plurality of winding slots. A plurality of stator windings pass through the plurality of winding slots that include slot liners configured to provide electrostatic shields surrounding the plurality of stator windings. The electrostatic shields are referenced to an electrical location to reduce common mode currents associated with the electric motor.
