A cooling system for a rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) of a vehicle includes a coolant circuit configured to direct a coolant flow through the RESS to remove thermal energy from the RESS, and a refrigerant circuit through which a flow of refrigerant is circulated. A chiller is fluidly connected to the coolant circuit and the refrigerant circuit and is configured to transfer thermal energy between the coolant circuit and the refrigerant circuit. An auxiliary circuit is fluidly connected to the coolant circuit. The auxiliary circuit is configured to selectably direct at least a portion of the coolant flow across a first side of a cold plate for thermal energy exchange with a phase change material located at a second side of the cold plate. One or more valves are configured to selectably direct the at least a portion of the coolant flow through the auxiliary circuit.

Augmented cooling of electric vehicle

A vapor injection refrigerant system includes a compressor, a condenser coupled to the compressor, an evaporator coupled to the condenser, and a chiller coupled to the condenser. The compressor includes at least a first stage and a second stage and is configured to output refrigerant in vapor form. The chiller is configured to inject refrigerant in vapor form into the second stage of the compressor. Additionally, the system may include a three-way valve having a first outlet coupled to the second stage of the compressor and a second outlet coupled to an outlet of the evaporator, and a control module configured to control the three-way valve to inject refrigerant in vapor form into the second stage of the compressor at a pressure greater than a pressure of the first stage of the compressor. Other example vapor injection refrigerant systems are also disclosed.

A charge port for an electric vehicle includes a first charging terminal, a second charging terminal spaced from the first charging terminal, and a phase change material (PCM) cartridge including a non-porous housing storing an amount of PCM. The non-porous housing is arranged in thermal contact with one of the first charging terminal and the second charging terminal.

Charge port cooling system for an electric vehicle

An electric power system has a power inverter system with a quasi-resonant circuit (QRC), and a controller, and couples a DC power supply to an electric machine. The power inverter system includes a positive inverter bus and a negative inverter bus; first paired switches; a positive DC bus terminal; and a negative DC bus terminal. The QRC includes an inverter inductance device, a capacitor, a first bus switch, and a second bus switch. The inverter inductance device and the second bus switch are arranged in series between the positive inverter bus and the first switch node, and the first bus switch is arranged between the positive DC bus terminal and the positive inverter bus. The controller is configured to control the QRC to generate an alternating current in the DC power supply.

System for generating thermal heat in an electric power system and an electrified powertrain

A device for thermal control of a battery system includes a heating control module electrically connected to the battery system and a conversion device configured to control power output from the battery system. The heating control module is configured to measure a current through the conversion device, the measured current provided by the battery system of a vehicle during vehicle operation or provided by an energy source during vehicle charging. The heating control module is also configured to control the conversion device to generate an alternating current (AC) heating current using the measured current, and apply the AC heating current to the battery system to heat the battery system to a desired temperature.

Battery heating during vehicle operation and/or during vehicle charging

An electric vehicle charging port includes a pair of charging pins each connected to a respective charging cable by a base. A pair of porous metallic cages surround the base of the pair of charging pins. A phase change material disposed in the pair of porous metallic cages and a vapor chamber is disposed between the base of the pair of charging pins and the pair of porous cage. The phase change material with an optional vapor chamber and high thermal conductivity (metal or graphite) foam or mesh to provide faster response of transient heat generation.

A method for continuously managing thermal energy in a motor vehicle includes initializing a continuous thermal energy management control loop within a controller disposed in the motor vehicle, calculating a quantity of stored energy in a thermal management system equipped to the motor vehicle, calculating a quantity of thermal energy waste in the thermal management system, determining if thermal energy is needed within a component of the thermal management system, selectively generating thermal energy, selectively transporting thermal energy to the component of the thermal management system, determining a thermal storage capacity of the thermal management system, determining if a thermal energy deficit exists within the thermal management system, and directing a flow of a thermal energy carrying liquid to a thermal energy reservoir.

Vehicle thermal systems low to high quality energy management, storage, recovery, and optimization

A thermal energy management system for a vehicle supplies thermal energy to a passenger compartment of the vehicle. The thermal energy management system includes three thermal fluid loops. The first thermal fluid loop includes a coolant pump for circulating a coolant through at least a vehicle battery, a transmission oil cooler of the vehicle, and a chiller such that the coolant selectively transfers thermal energy from the vehicle battery, the transmission oil cooler, and the chiller. The second thermal fluid loop circulates oil through the transmission oil cooler. The third thermal fluid loop circulates a refrigerant through at least the chiller and at least one condenser such that the third thermal fluid loop transfers thermal energy to the passenger compartment.

Vehicle thermal system architecture

A battery pack is provided. The battery pack includes first and second temperature sensors that are disposed in first and second interior spaces, respectively. The first temperature sensor generates a first signal indicative of a first temperature level of the battery cell. The second temperature sensor generates a second signal indicative of a second temperature level of the DC-DC voltage converter. The battery pack further includes a microprocessor that determines a first desired operational speed value of the electric fan based on the first temperature level, and a second desired operational speed value of the electric fan based on the second temperature level. The microprocessor selects the first desired operational speed value if the first desired operational speed value is greater than the second desired operational speed value.

Battery pack and method of controlling an electric fan in the battery pack

A battery pack is provided. The battery pack includes first and second temperature sensors that are disposed in first and second interior spaces, respectively. The first temperature sensor generates a first signal indicative of a first temperature level of the battery cell. The second temperature sensor generates a second signal indicative of a second temperature level of the DC-DC voltage converter. The battery pack further includes a microprocessor that determines a first fan speed percentage value of the electric fan based on the first temperature level, and a second fan speed percentage value of the electric fan based on the second temperature level. The microprocessor selects the first fan speed percentage value if the first fan speed percentage value is greater than the second fan speed percentage value.

A battery cell assembly having a cooling fin with a tube and a flexible thermally conductive sheet disposed on the tube is provided. The tube has first, second, and third tube portions. The sheet has first, second, and third sheet portions. The first and second sheet portions are disposed on at least the first and second tube portions, respectively, and the third sheet portion extends between the first and second tube portions. The assembly further includes a first clamping member clamping the first sheet portion to the first tube portion, and a second clamping member clamping the second sheet portion to the second tube portion. The assembly further includes a battery cell disposed against the third sheet portion.

Battery cell assembly and method for manufacturing a cooling fin for the battery cell assembly

A battery pack having a battery module, a thermoelectric heat pump, and a cooling manifold is provided. The battery module has a first battery cell, a housing, and a first solid cooling fin. A first panel portion of the first solid cooling fin is disposed against the first battery cell. A second panel portion of the first solid cooling fin is disposed on an outer surface of the housing and is coupled to an end portion of the first panel portion. A first side of the thermoelectric heat pump is disposed against the second panel portion, and a second side of the thermoelectric heat pump is disposed against the cooling manifold. The thermoelectric heat pump transfers heat energy from the first solid cooling fin to the cooling manifold in response to a first electrical current flowing through the thermoelectric heat pump in a first direction, to reduce a temperature level of the first battery cell.

Battery pack

A battery system is provided. The battery system includes a cooling plate having a housing, an inlet port, and an outlet port. The housing defines an interior region. Both the inlet port and the outlet port fluidly communicate with the interior region. The battery system further includes a solid thermoplastic cooling fin having first and second panel portions. The first panel portion is disposed directly on and against the cooling plate. The battery system further includes a first battery cell disposed directly on and against a first side of the second panel portion of the solid thermoplastic cooling fin. The solid thermoplastic cooling fin is configured to conduct heat energy from the first battery cell to the cooling plate.

Battery system and method of assembling the battery system

A battery cell assembly is provided. The battery cell assembly includes a cooling fin having a rectangular-shaped aluminum plate, a tube, and a flexible thermally conductive sheet. The plate has a first side and a second side. The tube is coupled to the first side of the plate and extends on at least first, second, and third peripheral edge portions of the plate. The flexible thermally conductive sheet is disposed on the first side of the plate. The battery cell assembly further includes a battery cell disposed against the flexible thermally conductive sheet of the cooling fin.

A battery cell assembly having a cooling fin with a tube, a substantially rectangular-shaped metal plate, first and second cylindrical coupling members, and first and second O-ring gaskets is provided. The tube has an inlet tube portion and an outlet tube portion. The tube is coupled to a peripheral region of the metal plate. The first cylindrical coupling member has a first aperture extending therethrough, and first and second circumferential grooves. The inlet tube portion is disposed in the first aperture and coupled to the first cylindrical coupling member. The first and second O-ring gaskets are disposed in the first and second circumferential grooves, respectively. The outlet tube portion is disposed in the second aperture and is coupled to the second cylindrical coupling member.
