Systems for removing one or more contaminants from water are provided that can include a hydrate formation chamber assembly; a contaminated water diffusion assembly within the hydrate formation chamber assembly; a space between a wall of the hydrate formation chamber assembly and the diffusion assembly; and a guest compound conduit configured to provide a guest compound within the space and form a hydrate comprising water and the guest compound. Methods for removing one or more contaminants from water are provided that can include providing a contaminated water mixture and one or more guest compounds; forming a hydrate complex comprising water and the one or more guest compounds; and separating the water from the guest compounds to provide water with less contaminant. Mixtures are also provided that can include a liquid component comprising water and at least one contaminant, and a solid component comprising a hydrate complex. One embodiment of the system provides methods for production of excess electric power as a byproduct of the desalination process.

Systems, methods, and compositions for purifying water

Disclosed herein are embodiments of a polymer-functionalized particle for using in isolating and extracting solutes, such as rare earth metals, lithium, and the like. The polymer-functionalized particles exhibit strong resistance to agglomeration and degradation even in high ionic strength and/or temperature environments. A post-particle synthesis method for making the polymer-functionalized particle is disclosed, along with a magnetic separation device and that can be used in system embodiments to facilitate use and regeneration of the polymer-functionalized particles in solute extraction.

Disclosed are compositions of a fused filament fabrication (FFF) composite filament having embedded functional materials in a thermoplastic matrix. Methods of making the composite filaments are also disclosed. In one example, a FFF composite filament incorporates a MOF, in an amount greater than 10% by mass, dispersed in a matrix polymer. One example of a method of synthesizing FFF composite filaments involves mixing a suspension that has a MOF with a matrix polymer solution to yield a polymer-MOF mixture. The mixture is cast and dried into a solid composite material, which is formed a FFF composite filament having the MOF in an amount greater than 10% by mass.

A method of making carbon-based nano-rods from switchable ionic liquids (SWIL) that incorporates the SWIL is disclosed. Resulting nano-rods provide adsorption and spontaneous desorption of water at selected relative humidity values that find use in selected applications and devices.

A system and process are disclosed for production of consolidated magnesium metal products and alloys with selected densities from magnesium-containing salts and feedstocks. The system and process employ a dialkyl magnesium compound that decomposes to produce the Mg metal product. Energy requirements and production costs are lower than for conventional processing.

The invention provides stabilized, biocompatible gold nanoparticles that are stabilized with material from epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCg), which is a polyphenols- or flavonoids-rich plant material that can be obtained from green tea. The EGCg is an antioxidant reducing agent derived from green tea. The gold nanoparticles of the invention can be radioactive or non radioactive and are formed via a simple room temperature fabrication method. In preferred embodiment method of making, an aqueous solution containing gold salts is provided. The aqueous solution is mixed with EGCg in a buffer, such as deionized water. The gold salts react to form biocompatible gold nanoparticles that are stabilized with a coating of EGCg. The thermodynamically feasible redox couple of AuCl4-/EGCg leading to the reduction of AuCl4- by EGCg to form gold nanoparticles. In another embodiment, pre-cooled gold salt and EGCg solutions form multi-layered EGCg coated particles.

The invention provides stabilized, biocompatible gold nanoparticles that are stabilized with material from polyphenols- or flavanoids-rich plant material or reactive phytochemical components of the plant material. The gold nanoparticles of the invention can be fabricated with an environmentally friendly method for making biocompatible stabilized gold nanoparticles. In preferred embodiments, the coating consists of material from polyphenols- or flavanoids-rich plant material or reactive phytochemical components of the plant material.

The invention provides stabilized, biocompatible gold nanoparticles that are stabilized with material from polyphenols- or flavanoids-rich plant material or reactive phytochemical components of the plant material. The gold nanoparticles of the invention can be fabricated with an environmentally friendly method for making biocompatible stabilized gold nanoparticles. In methods of the invention, an aqueous solution containing gold salts is mixed with polyphenols- or flavanoids-rich plant material. In preferred embodiment methods of making, an aqueous solution containing gold salts is provided. The aqueous solution is mixed with black tea, turmeric, curcumin or cinnamon or a similar naturally occurring polyphenols- or flavanoids-rich plant material. The gold salts react to form biocompatible gold nanoparticles that are stabilized with a coating of the polyphenols- or flavanoids-rich plant material. The black tea, turmeric, curcumin or cinnamon or similar naturally occurring polyphenols- or flavanoids-rich plant material can be a powder or can be in its root or bark form.
