Consistent with the present disclosure, circuitry may be provided in an optical receiver that can determine a bit error rate (BER) associated with an incoming signal by dividing the number of errored bits in a frame alignment signals (FAS) by the number of bits in the FAS. Accordingly, although an optical signal may be severely degraded and forward error correction (FEC) cannot be performed, a BER may be obtained if the FAS can be identified. The BER can then be used in a feedback loop to control various optical or electrical components in the receiver to improve or reduce the BER to a level, for example, at which FEC can be performed.

Method and system for control of communication equipment based on a bit error rate derived from a frame alignment signal

An apparatus and method for uniformly sharing across a plurality of channel signals FEC coding gain which may be achieved through FEC encoding of a higher baud rate electrical data signal or through multiplexed or combined electrical data signals from multiple data sources prior to their subsequent demultiplexing and separate generation into optical channel signals which are multiplexed and launched onto an optical transmission medium. The optical signal generation is achieved through reverse multiplexing of the higher baud rate data signal or of the multiplexed, FEC encoded plural data signals. Effectively, the coding gain power of the FEC encoder is spread over all the signal channels so that each channel can potentially benefit from performance above the average coding gain thereby increasing the coding gain of the worst noise signal channel and correspondingly reducing its BER at the receiver so that, now, the combined multiple channel signals may be propagated further along the optical transmission medium before signal interception is required, such as required channel signal regeneration (3R). By coding gain averaging, the coding gain is taken from the lesser noise affected channels and spread over all the channels so the higher noised ridden channels obtain an effective increase in coding gain which corresponds to a higher reduction in BER at the optical receiver terminal.

Method and apparatus for deploying forward error correction in optical transmission networks and the deployment of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) chips with the same

An enhanced forward error correction system is disclosed. Transmitted data is encoded into codewords in multiple dimensions. The decoding of received data by a decoder is performed in multiple passes in each dimension, with corrected data provided as an output from each pass into another decoder for the next decode pass. The encoder in one embodiment comprises a parallel inner RS(247,239) encoder or encoders and parallel outer BCH(255,247) encoder or encoders. Additional steps are added for error multiplication reduction. The system provides an approach to detect generally uncorrectable patterns for concatenated codes and provides a correction mechanism for improving error correction performance.

Error correction improvement for concatenated codes

A multidimensional forward error correction system. Transmitted data is encoded by an encoder in multiple dimensions. The decoding of received data by a decoder is performed in multiple passes, with corrected data rewritten into memory. The encoder in one embodiment comprises a parallel column decoder and multiple row encoders encoding a (255, 239) BCH code.

Product code based forward error correction system

A semi-parallel forward error correction system. In one embodiment the forward error correction system includes a semi-parallel Reed-Solomon encoder and a semi-parallel Reed-Solomon decoder. Information symbols comprised of bytes are provided eight bytes in parallel to an encoder which in parallel forms eight bytes of a nonsystematic code word. On decoding, a code word is provided to a time multiplexed syndrome generator and key equation solver. An error locator polynomial from the key equation solver and the syndromes from the syndrome generator are provided to an error location and error magnitude unit, which includes a plurality of polynomial evaluator units which process an error locator polynomial in parallel.
