Methods and systems for detecting the presence of irregularities in milk, and for assessing a health state of a lactating mammal, are provided. A sample of milk is illuminated with a light beam. Scattering data resulting from an interaction between the light beam and the sample of milk is collected. The scattering data is processed to detect the presence or absence of light scattered at a predetermined angle relative to a normal orientation, for instance to determine at least one characteristic of the sample of milk. Based on the presence or absence of light, the presence of irregularities in the sample of milk can be determined, for instance to assess the health state of the lactating mammal based on the at least one characteristic of the sample of milk.

Early warning of changing health and robustness is given by tracking of ease of morphological changes in blood cells obtained by comparing intensities in a first scattered light intensity angular distribution and intensities in a second scattered light intensity angular distribution, with the light being scattered by blood cells into very narrowly forward scattered light intensity angular range.

Approximations to distinguish between X sperm and Y sperm are obtained by detecting light scattered into a pre-set angular range. The scattered light is scattered in turn by nuclei of sperm moving single-file in a sample container. The sperm are not modified prior to the light scattering and are not modified by the light scattering. Approximations are improved by at least a second detection of scattered light.

Device and process to approximate somatic cell count (SCC) of untreated mammalian milk by the two variable equation SCC=f (FSL, FAT) with a forward scattered light factor (FSL) being obtained by detecting light scattered by the milk into an angular range within, and less than, the angular range 0.0 to 0.5 degrees away from the central axis of incident light, with a proxy (FAT) for the fat content of the milk, which may be obtained by detecting light attenuation of the milk sample, and with the function (f) being obtained by calibration of the device using reference milk samples.

Differences between a control profile of light scattered by a control sample from a sample of whole blood and a detection profile of light scattered from a detection sample from the sample of whole blood with a detection agent added indicate malaria infection of the whole blood, where the light scattering is Mie scattering by an ensemble of scatterers in samples which are detection optimized to a concentration just low enough so that each scatterer which does scatter light scatters light only once, where the profiles are for light scattered between zero and five degrees.
