A heat transfer fluid comprising a carrier fluid and a nano-additive is provided. The heat transfer fluid is manufactured by dispersing the nano-additive in the carrier fluid. The nano-additive comprises nano-particles having a porous structure that provides dispersion stability of the nano-additive in the heat transfer fluid. The nano-additive structure has an aspect ratio of about 1.0 to about 10,000, a porosity of about 40% to about 85%, a density of about 0.4 g/cc to about 3.0 g/cc, an average pore diameter of about 0.1 nanometer to about 100 nanometers, and a specific surface area of about 1 m/g to about 4000 m/g. The nano-additive increases the heat transfer efficiency of the heat transfer fluid and also reduces the moisture content of the heat transfer fluid.

Heat transfer fluid containing nano-additive

A method and composition for making hybrid nanoparticles and use of such nanoparticles are disclosed herein. In one embodiment of the invention, the hybrid nanoparticles comprise a phase change material (PCM) and a metal layer encapsulating the phase change material. In another embodiment of the invention, the hybrid nanoparticles comprise a phase change material, a polymer layer encapsulating the phase change material, and an outer metal layer encapsulating the polymer layer. In another embodiment of the invention, the hybrid nanoparticles comprise an inner core of a PCM encapsulated by a polymer shell containing embedded nanoparticles that have a high thermal conductivity.

Hybrid nanoparticles

This invention is directed to coolant compositions, particularly coolant compositions useful in fuel cells, and to fuel cells containing such coolant compositions. The coolant compositions or heat transfer fluids of this invention have and retain low electrical conductivity through extended periods of use. These coolants or heat transfer fluids are composed of a base composition and an additive package which imparts the property of retaining low electrical conductivity for extended periods of time. The base composition can be de-ionized water (DI water) alone or a mixture of DI water and a freezing point depressant of the types well-known in the art (e.g., propylene glycol). The additive package contains an organic corrosion inhibitor and a polymeric ion suppressant. The use of both components of the additive package is important.

A heat transfer fluid composition and process employing composite mixtures of terpenes and silicones useful for heat transfer processes in a temperature range down to &#x2212;200&#xb0; F., where the fluid heat transfer composition retains its liquid phase over the entire temperature range.

Heat transfer fluid compositions for low temperature applications

Heat transfer fluid compositions comprising (a) a terpene component, comprising at least one terpene; and (b) an alkylbenzene component, comprising at least one alkylbenzene; wherein the components are provided in an effective amount such that the 5resultant composition retains the liquid phase at temperatures in the range from about 0.degree. F. to below about -120.degree. F., preferably from about 0.degree. F. to about -175.degree. F.
