A liquid thermoset coating is described for application on and near surfaces of molded plastic parts where the resin rich phase has been disturbed or imperfectly formed. The coating has been found to be effective at minimizing paint pops and craters in subsequent finish coatings on said parts. Said paint pops and craters develop during heated cure cycles for the finish coatings. The coating which is applied to the heated part and subsequently cured is preferably an epoxy composition of low viscosity. The molded plastic parts are preferably fiber reinforced thermoset polyester parts with an in-mold coating to improve surface quality.

A latex binder composition comprises occluded composite particles containing at least a vinyl ester homopolymer or a copolymer thereof polymerized from acrylate and/or ethylene monomers, and a polymer polymerized from conjugated diene and/or vinyl substituted aromatic monomers and desirably unsaturated carboxylic acid monomers. The occluded composite particles are produced in the absence of crosslinking agents by first polymerizing the vinyl esters and optional acrylate and/or ethylene monomers, and subsequently in situ polymerizing the conjugated diene and/or vinyl substituted aromatic, etc., monomers in the presence of the vinyl ester latex particles. The occluded composite-particle latex contains phase separated domains which are neither a core-shell nor an inverted core-shell particle and provide properties which are superior to physical blends of the two classes of polymers when utilized as binders in paper coating formulations. Such properties include excellent ink receptivity, low mottle, good blister resistance, good coating strength, good brightness, and the like.

A water based coating composition provides a stain resistant layer which adheres well to a substrate and is resistant to chemical attack by common household cleaning solvents such as isopropyl alcohol. The coating composition has a very low volatile organic compound content, thus providing an environmentally desirable alternative to organic solvent based coatings. The low volatile organic compound content of the composition substantially or completely eliminates the problems and expenses associated with solvent recovery for meeting chemical emission standards, and the potential for human exposure to solvent vapor is substantially eliminated or significantly reduced. The coating composition is aqueous based and incorporates a crosslinkable acrylic polymer latex, an amino resin crosslinking agent and a crosslinking catalyst. The polymer, crosslinking agent and catalyst are dispersed and/or solubilized in an aqueous medium. The coating composition is particularly well suited for application to flexible vinyl chloride polymer substrates to produce upon curing and drying a stain resistant, easily cleanable laminate. The stain resistant laminates can be advantageously used in the manufacture of wallcoverings, luggage exteriors, upholstery, vehicle interior and seat coverings, golf bags and other sporting goods, table cloths, and other similar applications.

This invention relates to a method of sealing the porous surfaces that can be generated during the manufacturing and processing of molded plastic parts. Liquid thermoset coatings are applied to preheated parts and cured to create a barrier on the surface to gasses generated during heat curing of subsequently applied surface coatings. The liquid coating may be comprised of polyurethane forming components; those components in combination with unsaturated polyester resins; vinyl ester resin compositions; coatings derived from hydroxyl or carboxyl containing oligomers reacted with alkylated urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, and/or benzoquanamine-formaldehyde resins; and oligomers containing carboxyls reacted with triglycidyl isocyanurate.

A primerless, one-part, heat curable, low volatile organic compound, polyurethane composition comprises a blocked polyurethane prepolymer made from a liquid hydroxyl terminated intermediate and an excess of a polyisocyanate, a curing agent, silicone and/or low friction polymer and optional fillers. Upon cure of the polyurethane composition, the silicone oil and/or low friction polymer generally imparts low friction and high abrasive resistant properties. An aqueous composition comprising an alkaline rubbery vinyl pyridine latex, a water dispersible or soluble epoxide and a polyfunctional amine can be used to treat a polyamide reinforcing element, e.g. a poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) cord, to increase the adhesion of the cord to rubber. Further improvements in adhesion can be obtained if the cord before treatment with the aqueous composition is exposed to a cold gas plasma of air, N.sub.2, He, Ne or Ar or mixture thereof at up to about 300 watts of power for a few seconds to several minutes to improve its adhesion to rubber.
