An actuation system of a transfer case includes a face cam, a motor, a gear reduction assembly, and an intermediate rotating member. The face cam includes a first member and a second member, and rotation of the first member relative to the second annular causes the first member or the second annular member to displace axially relative to the other member for selective operation of a torque transfer mechanism of the torque transfer device. The gear reduction assembly includes a first planetary gear set that increases torque from the motor by a first ratio, and a second planetary gear set that increases torque from the first planetary gear set by a second ratio and is coaxial with the first planetary gear set and the motor. The intermediate rotating member is rotated by the gear reduction assembly and rotates the first annular member for selective operation of the torque transfer mechanism.

Actuation system having face cam mechanism operated by a planetary gear set

A transfer case () is disclosed. The transfer case () includes an input shaft () and a sun gear (). The sun gear () includes a collar end () and a gear end () and at least a portion of the sun gear () circumscribes the input shaft (). A hub () circumscribes the collar end () and the input shaft (), and may be slidably move between a first position () and a second position () opposite the first position () along the input shaft () and the collar end (). A plurality of planetary gears () is mounted in a carrier body () circumscribing the gear end (), and the carrier body () is splined with the transfer case input shaft (). A ring gear () circumscribes the plurality of planetary gears () mounted in the carrier body (), and is integrally joined with an output shaft (). The ring gear () is rotatable around the plurality of planetary gears ().

Transfer case for a drive train

A transfer case of a motor vehicle drivetrain includes a planetary gear set including a ring gear to receive input torque, and a pinion assembly having pinion gears in mesh with the ring gear and a carrier to carry the pinion gears and transmit output torque. A sun gear is in mesh with the pinion gears, is selectively connectable to the carrier and rotatable therewith in a two-wheel drive mode and in a four-wheel-drive high range mode, and is selectively fixable against rotational motion in a four-wheel drive low range mode.

Multi-speed transfer case

An auxiliary electric drive assembly includes an alternating current induction motor, planetary speed reduction gearing and a differential. The differential may be either active or passive. The auxiliary drive system is utilized as the front axle in a rear wheel drive vehicle and the rear axle in a front wheel drive vehicle. Elimination of many of the components in a conventional four wheel drive system such as the transfer case and hybrid gears improves the overall efficiency and fuel economy of a vehicle so equipped.
