A technique is directed to simulating a ransomware attack in a testing environment. The technique involves obtaining access to a testing environment in which to perform a simulated ransomware attack. The technique further involves, after obtaining access to the testing environment, loading prepared data into the testing environment. The technique further involves performing, as the simulated ransomware attack, a set of input/output (IO) operations based on a set of IO traces corresponding to an actual ransomware attack, the set of IO operations accessing the prepared data.

Simulating a ransomware attack in a testing environment

A virtual volume (vVol) is non-disruptively migrated from a first data storage appliance (DSS) to a second DSS. In a synchronizing phase, data is copied from a source vVol to a destination vVol which is not mapped and to which a host computer has no path. Upon completion of synchronization, (1) a mapping is created to the destination vVol for the host and signaled to the host by sending a notification having an associated log page, (2) it is determined whether the host has retrieved the log page, (3) in response the host retrieving the log page, a cutover is performed making the destination vVol accessible to the host and the source vVol inaccessible to the host, and (4) in response to the host not retrieving the log page, the cutover is not performed, leaving the destination vVol inaccessible to the host computer (migration may be aborted or retried).

Techniques for managing sequencing requests for storage node operations based on types of operations being sequenced. The techniques manage sequencing requests for different types of operations, such as backup and recovery operations, replication operations, migration operations, and so on, in a manner that avoids overwhelming storage node capacity. The techniques include receiving a sequencing request for an operation of a specified operation type at a request manager of a storage node and determining whether a capacity of the storage node is available for running the operation by a capacity manager for the specified operation type, in which the capacity manager is provided by a storage client and implemented on the storage node separate from the request manager. In this way, throttling, limiting, and/or prioritization requirements of the operation of the specified operation type can be defined by the storage client in a manner agnostic to the request manager.

Migrating a source volume from a source appliance to a destination appliance, wherein the source volume is assigned to an asymmetric namespace access (ANA) group and initially exposed to a host computer as accessible at the source appliance, includes creating a destination volume on the destination appliance and expanding the ANA group to include the destination volume, with the ANA group initially exposing the destination volume as inaccessible to the host computer at the destination appliance. Subsequently, the destination volume is synchronized to the source volume and then a cutover is performed that includes (i) copying volume metadata including host reservations from the source volume to the destination volume, and (ii) changing the ANA group to expose the source volume as inaccessible at the source appliance and the destination volume as accessible at the destination appliance.

A data storage system in a cluster of storage systems provides virtual-volume data storage to virtual-computing (VC) hosts. A storage container is created for use as a logical grouping of virtual volumes (VVols), and \the storage container is paired as a source storage container with a target storage container on a remote target data storage system. The pairing identifies the target storage container to be used for storing a replica of a replication group of VVols to be stored in the source storage container. When a VVol having a requirement for protection by replication is created, it is placed in a replication group of the source storage container. Subsequently, based on the VVol being a member of the replication group of the source storage container, the VVol is replicated to a target replication group of the target storage container of the remote data storage system.

A method, computer program product, and computing system for receiving an control plane request on a layered services architecture that includes a plurality of discrete services and a rules engine. The control plane request is processed with the rules engine to identify one or more mandatory services, chosen from the plurality of discrete services, required to process the control plane request.
