The invention provides an isolated polynucleotide comprising the sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1 or a variant thereof, wherein the variant encodes a polypeptide capable of modulating in a plant tolerance to at least one environmental stress selected from drought, cold, freezing, heat and salinity. The invention also provides construct, vectors, host cells, plant cells and plants genetically modified to comprise the polynucleotide. The invention also provides methods for producing and selecting plants that are tolerant to at least one environmental stress selected from drought, cold, freezing, heat and salinity, making use of the polynucleotides of the invention.

Methods and compositions for plant improvement

Methods are described for producing a plant with altered seed yield comprising transformation of a plant with a genetic construct including a polynucleotide encoding of a polypeptide with the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1 or a variant or fragment thereof. Also provided by the disclosed methods are isolated polypeptides, polynucleotides, constructs and vectors useful for producing a plant with altered seed yield. The methods also provide plant cells and plants transformed to contain and express the polypeptides, polynucleotides and constructs. Plants produced by the disclosed methods are further provided.

Gene expression control in plants

Constructs and methods for using the inventive regulatory sequences for modifying transcription of endogenous and/or heterologous polynucleotides also are included in the invention.

Compositions and methods for producing plants with improved stress tolerance

Isolated stress-responsiveness promoters suitable for directing gene expression in plant cells or plants are provided, along with constructs, vectors, host cells, plant cells and plant comprising the promoters. Methods for producing plant cells or plants with modified phenotype via transformation of the plant cells or plants with the promoters are also provided.

Regulation of gene expression in plants

The present invention provides methods for modulating cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin composition and deposition in secondary cell wall layers of plants to improve plant traits that are commercially desirable (e.g., enhanced digestibility of forage crops by animals, increased post-harvest processing of wood and crops for energy production and pulping, increase mechanical strength of plants, and others). The invention also provides methods for identifying genes encoding transcription factors that regulate the formation of secondary cell walls, polynucleotide sequences that encode key components of secondary cell walls, and transgenic plants comprising these sequences.
