Aspects described herein relate to activating, at a user equipment (UE), a first set of antennas or associated communication resources of the UE to measure a first synchronization signal block (SSB) for synchronizing communications in a first connected mode discontinuous receive (CDRX) period without activating a second set of antennas or associated communication resources of the UE to measure a second SSB, and activating, at the UE, the second set of antennas or associated communication resources of the UE to measure a second SSB for synchronizing communications in a second CDRX period without activating the first set to measure the first SSB.

Techniques for optimizing power consumption in wireless communication devices

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. An example method includes performing transmission or receive beam measurements at two or more wireless antennas of a wireless device, selecting a serving beam pair based at least in part on the transmission or receive beam measurements, and presenting an indication at the wireless device corresponding to the selected serving beam pair. The method may further include detecting user obstruction of part of the selected serving beam pair. The method may also include determining that a transmission power restriction applies to a first antenna associated with the selected transmission beam based at least in part on the transmission or receive beam measurements. Other example methods may further include detecting a change in an orientation of the wireless device and performing the transmission or receive beam measurements in response to detecting the change in the orientation of the wireless device.

Beam selection in handheld wireless communications devices

Various aspects of the present disclosure enable a plurality of mobile devices (UEs) within a cell to spread out in time their respective transmissions of signaling messages, such as cell update messages, when the network enables or disables enhanced uplink (EUL, sometimes referred to as high-speed uplink packet access or HSUPA) while the UE is in the CELL_FACH state, by changing SIB5 or SIB5bis. In this way, the network load may be reduced, and a network blockage that otherwise might result from large numbers of UEs simultaneously transmitting the cell update message can be avoided. According to one example, a network node may be configured to distribute CELL_UPDATE messages or procedures to UEs when the network node enables or disables EUL in CELL_FACH by changing SIB5 or SIB5bis over time to reduce the network load. According to another example, a UE may be configured for utilizing a random timer or back-off timer to defer cell updates.

Apparatus and method for deferring cell update messages from user equipment

Aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to managing decoding of system information blocks (SIBs) at a user equipment (UE) and managing SIB transmissions at a base station. For example, the described aspects at the UE may include detecting a trigger event for decoding one or more SIBs received from a cell and determining to avoid decoding of at least one SIB received from the cell in response to the detected trigger event and a mobility pattern of the UE. The described aspect at the UE may further include using a stored version of the at least one SIB for communication with the first cell.

Techniques for improved decoding of system information blocks

In various aspects, the disclosure provides user equipment (UE) capable of conducting a public land mobile network (PLMN) search by determining a paging schedule for a serving cell of the UE, the serving cell being associated with a first PLMN and the paging schedule defining one or more paging occasions. The UE may initiate a search for a second PLMN between consecutive paging occasions, and may read information blocks on a broadcast channel of a cell of the second PLMN. The UE may discontinue reading a partially-read information block when the partially-read information block is scheduled for transmission at least partially concurrently with a paging occasion on the serving cell if the partially-read information block does not include information for identifying the second PLMN. The UE may ignore the first paging occasion when the partially-read information block includes the information for identifying the second PLMN.

Method to improve public land mobile network search

Certain aspects of the present disclosure relate to techniques for improving a circuit-switched fallback (CSFB) user experience. In aspects, methods and systems for autonomously returning a user equipment (UE) from a 2G (2generation)/3G (3generation) network to an LTE (Long Term Evolution) network are provided. The UE may store a flag to note whether a current circuit switched (CS) call in the 2G/3G network is a result of a CSFB. The UE, in response to detecting a termination of the current CS call in the 2G/3G network and determining that the terminated call was a CSFB call (e.g., from the status of the flag), may trigger a mobility mechanism to autonomously return the UE to the LTE network.

Methods and apparatus for improving a call fallback user experience

A method includes receiving a dormancy request from an application executing at a communication device. In response to the dormancy request, a message is sent from the communication device to a radio network controller. The message indicates that a data session has ended. After expiration of a time period following sending of the message, state information is provided to the application. The state information indicates whether the communication device is in a low-power state.

An apparatus and a method are provided for improving user experience in a multi-radio access bearer (multi-RAB) wireless communication system. After a user equipment establishes a circuit-switched communication link and a packet-switched communication link with a core network, it may receive an indication of an error associated with the packet-switched communication link. Here, if the value of a timer such as the RAB re-establishment timer T314 has a predetermined value (e.g., 0), the user equipment may release the packet-switched communication link, and maintain the circuit-switched communication link. The packet-switched communication link may then be re-established. In this fashion, errors that may occur on the data call need not interrupt a voice call.

Apparatus and method for maintaining a circuit-switched voice call in a multi-RAB wireless communication system in an area of weak coverage

The present disclosure presents a method and apparatus for dynamically configuring a cell update message at a user equipment (UE). For example, the method may include determining that a size of the cell update message at the UE is above a threshold value after a 'measured results on random access channel (RACH)' information element (IE) is excluded from the cell update message. Furthermore, such an example method may include removing one or more IEs from the cell update message until the size of the cell update message is at or below the threshold value. As such, dynamic configuration of a cell update message at a UE is achieved.

Method and apparatus for dynamically configuring a cell update message

Methods and devices are disclosed for enabling improved performance for page decodes on a SIM of a multi-SIM wireless communication device in which a shared radio frequency (RF) resource is used to read system information for a different SIM. After determining that a first SIM is using the shared RF resource to decode SIBs, the wireless device may receive information about an upcoming page decode time for monitoring a paging channel associated with the second SIM. The wireless device may obtain system information block (SIB) scheduling information associated with the first SIM, and may create a RF resource release gap during the system information read period based on the SIB scheduling information and the upcoming page decode time. Control of the RF resource may be released from the modem stack associated within the first SIM, and gained by a modem stack associated with the second SIM during the RF resource release gap.

System and methods for improving page decode performance during reading of system information on a multi-SIM wireless communication device

In various aspects of the disclosure, an improved tune-away technique is utilized by a user equipment (UE) for wireless communication during a signaling procedure for a primary subscription with reduced impact on paging performance of one or more secondary subscriptions. The UE performs a signaling procedure including receiving at least one protocol data unit (PDU) of a signaling radio bearer (SRB) message from a first network associated with the first subscription. The UE further determines a message type of the SRB message based on the at least one received PDU. If the message type indicates that the SRB message includes a signaling non-critical message, the UE further performs a tune-away procedure to communicate with a second network associated with the second subscription, while the signaling procedure is ongoing.

Enhanced tune-away mechanism during signaling procedure in multiple subscription communications

The present disclosure presents an improved method and apparatus for re-transmission of reconfiguration messages. For example, the disclosure presents a method for detecting that a reconfiguration complete message is transmitted from a user equipment (UE) to a network and initiating a reconfiguration re-transmission timer upon the detection. In addition, such an example method, may include determining that the UE has not received a layer two acknowledgement (L2 ACK) message for the transmitted reconfiguration complete message from the network prior to expiration of the reconfiguration re-transmission timer and triggering a cell update message to the network in response to the determination that the UE has not received the L2 ACK message. As such, improved re-transmission of reconfiguration messages may be achieved.

In a particular embodiment, a method includes sending a message from a communication device to a radio network controller. The message indicates that a data session has ended. The data session is supported by a wireless channel between the communication device and the radio network controller. After a time period following the sending of the message, a second message is selectively sent to the radio network controller. The second message indicates that the data session has ended. The second message is selectively sent based at least in part on whether a measurement indicates that data was communicated via the wireless channel during the time period.
