A method and apparatus for performing a vision process using a camera having a multi-focus lens having a lens field of view where the lens can be set at different focus positions the method comprising the steps of positioning at least one of the camera and an item to be imaged so the lens field of view is directed at the item to be imaged, obtaining a plurality of images where each image is obtained with the lens focus at a different position and after each image is obtained, attempting to perform the machine vision process using the image irrespective of whether or not the lens was focused when the image was obtained.

Fast vision system

Systems and methods provide for illuminating a subject using a light pipe that transmits light from a source. A method includes providing a light pipe, the light pipe defining an inner lumen through which the image sensor views the subject; providing a light source in alignment with a proximal portion of the light pipe; and using the light source, projecting a light into the light pipe and through the light pipe, the light pipe including a distal portion for providing a high-angle bright field illumination pattern on the subject with a first portion of the light and for reflecting a second portion of the light for providing a low-angle dark field illumination pattern on the subject.

Light pipe illumination system and method

A method is presented for processing an image of a two-dimensional (2D) matrix symbol having a plurality of data modules and a discontinuous finder pattern, each distorted by 'donut effects'. A resulting processed image contains an image of the 2D matrix symbol having a continuous finder pattern suitable for conventional 2D matrix symbol locating techniques, and having a plurality of data modules, each data module having a center more truly representative of intended data, and suitable for conventional 2D matrix symbol sampling and decoding. The method includes sharpening the distorted image of the 2D matrix symbol to increase a difference between low frequency and high frequency image feature magnitudes, thereby providing a sharpened image, and smoothing the sharpened image using a moving window over the sharpened image so as to provide a smoothed image, the moving window and a module of the 2D matrix code being of substantially similar size.

Method for locating and decoding distorted two-dimensional matrix symbols

A system and method is provided for illuminating a subject using a light pipe that transmits light from a source, such as an LED ring illuminator to an outlet that directs the light appropriately as either bright field illumination, dark field illumination or both. The light pipe can include concentric cylinders, typically with a bright field illuminator nested within a dark field illuminator. The tip of the dark field illuminator may be angled so as to internally reflect light inwardly toward the central optical axis of a camera at a low angle. The tip can be located near the focal plane of the camera for the desired field of view. The field of view of the camera sensor can be modified to reject data outside of a illumination field of a particular shape. This illumination field can be created by shaping the light pipe in a predetermined form that projects the modified illumination field. Likewise, a set of aiming illuminators (in, for example, a noticeable color) can be provided around the perimeter of the light pipe to delineate outer boundaries of the illumination field or area of interest. These approaches facilitate better aiming of the sensor into the desired area of interest so that it is illuminated and/or acquired most-fully.

A system and method is provided for selectively controlling the illumination, and particularly dark field illumination, applied to a symbol to be decoded, and for determining a suitable or optimized level of lighting for decoding the symbol. A ring-shaped illuminator is provided, and is segmented into a plurality of individually-controllable lighting portions which can be, for example, quadrants. Initially, illumination is provided to the symbol through an initial set of lighting conditions. Feedback from acquired image data is then used to determine whether the lighting is suitable for decoding the symbol and, if not, a controller varies the lighting applied to the symbol, and additional image data is acquired. This process is continued until suitable conditions are met. Alternatively, activation and deactivation of the lighting segments can be manually selected by an operator to provide suitable conditions.

Method and apparatus for providing omnidirectional lighting in a scanning device

A search method is disclosed for finding bar code symbols and various two-dimensional symbols, regardless of orientation, that is efficient, robust, and easy to use. The method works well on cluttered backgrounds, on skewed symbols, when symbols are almost touching, and when symbols are adjacent to text. The method includes choosing a candidate start region in the image, and then determining whether the candidate start region includes at least a portion of a candidate oriented encoded signal. Next, an approximate orientation of the candidate oriented encoded signal is determined. Then, the candidate start region is grown, using the approximate orientation, so as to form a candidate symbol region that encloses an entire candidate code symbol, including at least a portion of the candidate start region. The method is finely responsive to orientation.

Method for locating bar codes and symbols in an image

Visual information regarding intensity and intensity-based gradient information is used in a multi-step process for accurately locating and decoding an encoded visual symbol matrix. A symbol is preprocessed with filtering and morphology. A set of coarse locations of candidate symbols is filtered according to coarse geometric criteria to determine which image locations are most viable. Depending upon the symbol type, and information about the edges of the symbols, additional symbol-specific filtering and refinements can be applied or skipped. For 2D matrices filtering according to intensity variance criteria is followed by an edge-locating refinement and by identifying finder patterns and timing patterns. Once finder patterns and timing patterns are precisely located, the data region is decoded. Where a data region does not decode validly, another pass is run, using the non-morphed image, resulting in an overall saving of time, as rejections may require operator intervention.

Method and apparatus using intensity gradients for visual identification of 2D matrix symbols

An improved vision system is provided for identifying and assessing features of an article. Systems are provided for developing feature assessment programs, which, when deployed, may inspect parts and/or provide position information for guiding automated manipulation of such parts. The improved system is easy to use and facilitates the development of versatile and flexible article assessment programs. In one aspect, the system comprises a set of step tools from which a set of step objects is instantiated. The set of step tools may comprise machine vision step objects that comprise routines for processing an image of the article to provide article feature information. A control flow data structure and a data flow data structure may each be provided. The control flow data structure charts a flow of control among the step objects. The data flow data structure includes a data flow connection providing access to portions of the data flow data structure for at least one of individual accessing and individual defining of a data source for a given step object.
