An example demultiplexer may include at least one dispersive element that is common to multiple wavelength channels. The demultiplexer may additionally include multiple field lenses positioned optically downstream from the at least one dispersive element, where a number of the field lenses is equal to a number of the wavelength channels. An example multiplexer may include a single piece power monitor assembly that includes a collimator lens array, a focusing lens array, and a slot integrally formed therein. The collimator lens array may be positioned to receive multiple wavelength channels from a laser array. The focusing lens array may be positioned to focus multiple portions of the wavelength channels onto an array of photodetectors. The slot may be configured to tap the portions from the wavelength channels collimated into the single piece power monitor assembly by the collimator lens array and to direct the portions toward the focusing lens array.

Wavelength division multiplexing of uncooled lasers with wavelength-common dispersive element

A method of transmitting data may include receiving feedback information that includes effective channel bandwidths, signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) associated with multiple optical channels on an optical link, and individual SNRs associated with subcarriers on each optical channel. The method may include determining multiple subcarrier power allocation schemes based on the feedback information. Each subcarrier power allocation scheme may be associated with a corresponding optical channel from the multiple optical channels and may be configured to allocate a signal power among subcarriers configured to transmit on the corresponding optical channel. The method may include determining, based on the feedback information, an optical power allocation scheme configured to allocate an optical power among the multiple optical channels. The method may include transmitting data on the multiple optical channels based on the multiple subcarrier power allocation schemes and the optical power allocation scheme.

Data communication using multiple channels

An apparatus consisting of stacked slab waveguides whose outputs are vertically staggered is disclosed. At the input to the stacked waveguides, the entrances to each slab lie in approximately the same vertical plane. A spot which is imaged onto the input will be transformed approximately to a set of staggered rectangles at the output, without substantial loss in brightness, which staggered rectangles can serve as a convenient input to a spectroscopic apparatus. A slit mask can be added to spatially filter the outputs so as to present the desired transverse width in the plane of the spectroscopic apparatus parallel to its dispersion.

Apparatus for transforming the aspect ratio of an optical input field based on stacked waveguides

An apparatus consisting of two pairs of identical lenses which is suitable as a compound objective lens for high numerical aperture imaging is disclosed. The compound lens also has a wide field of view as a fraction of the compound lens focal length. By suitable choice of lens materials, well corrected near infrared imaging can be achieved. When two such compound lenses together with a diffraction grating are assembled into a spectrometer, excellent wavelength resolution in the near infrared can also be obtained.

A method (and system) for manufacturing an optical switching device. The method includes forming an array plate comprising at least one hundred sites from a first physical process, where each of the sites is for coupling to an optical fiber. The sites have a first spatial degree of error relative to an ideal mathematical grid of the sites. The first spatial degree of error is derived from at least the first physical process. The method forms a lens plate comprising a plurality of lenses from a second physical process. Each of the lenses is going to be coupled to at least one of the sites on the array plate. The lenses have a second spatial degree of error relative to a second mathematical grid of lenses. The second spatial degree of error is derived from at least the second physical process. The method then derives lens measurement values from each of the plurality of lenses. The method compares each of the site measurement values with its respective lens measurement value to determine an error measurement between the lens measurement values and the respective site measurement values at a first reference point. The method then shifts the site measurement values relative to the lens measurement values by a selected increment relative to the first reference point. The selected increment is an x-direction, a y-direction, or a theta direction, or any combination of these. The method repeats the comparing to derive an other error measurement after the site measurement values have been shifted and continuing to perform the comparing and shifting in an iterative manner to reduce and/or possibly minimize the error measurement between the site measurement values with its respective lens measurement values.

Method and computer aided apparatus for aligning large density fiber arrays

An apparatus for switching one of a plurality of optical signals from a plurality of optical fibers. The apparatus has an input fiber bundle housing comprising an outer side and an inner side. The input fiber bundle housing has a plurality of sites oriented in a spatial manner on the outer side for coupling to a plurality of input optical fibers. Each of the input optical fibers is capable of transmitting an optical signal. The apparatus also has a first mirror array disposed facing the inner side of the input fiber bundle housing. The first mirror array includes a plurality of mirrors. Each of the mirrors corresponds to one of the sites on the outer side of the input fiber bundle housing. A second mirror array is disposed facing the first mirror array. The second mirror array is also disposed around a periphery of the input fiber bundle. The second mirror array also has a plurality of mirrors, where each of the mirrors is capable of directing at least one signal from one of the mirrors on the first mirror array. The apparatus has an output fiber bundle housing comprising an outer side and an inner side. The output fiber bundle housing has a plurality of sites oriented in a spatial manner on the outer side for coupling to a plurality of output optical fibers. Each of the sites is capable of receiving at least one signal from one of the second mirrors.
