An embodiment of the invention generally relates to an apparatus for deploying a segmented reflector antenna. The apparatus includes a plurality of segments that can be rigid or flexible where each segment is hinged to an adjacent segment on either longitudinal side. The apparatus also includes a base, a plurality of inner deployment beams, and a plurality of outer deployment beams. Each inner deployment beam connects an inner side of a respective segment to the base and having a folded position and an extended position. Each outer deployment beam connects an outside side of a respective segment to the base and has a folded position and an extended position. The plurality of segments in a hinged folded position in response to the plurality of inner deployment beams being in the folded position and the outer deployment beams being in the folded position.

System and method for packaging and deploying a segmented reflector antenna

An improved structure and method for building large-aperture lightweight deformable mirrors uses a hinged substrate. In addition to reduced weight, the approach provides rigidity to the mirror, which is necessary for the accurate response to actuator commands and tolerance to disturbances. No stresses are induced in the substrate due to the commanded deformation of the substrate, regardless of the magnitude of the deformation. Any stresses in the substrate structure are those induced due to forces in the face sheet, which are likely to be small using advanced nano-laminate and membrane face sheet technologies. The magnitude of the deformation (dynamic range) is limited only by the actuator stroke, and not by the stresses induced in the substrate. The design therefore accommodates small-force, large-stroke actuators, as opposed to the current designs that use large-force, small-stroke actuators. The invention finds utility in numerous applications, including lightweight large aperture mirror substrate and RF reflector structures.

Hinged substrate for large-aperture, lightweight, deformable mirrors

The small field-of-view (FOV) limitation of current coherent beam combiner technology is overcome, enabling beam combining over significantly larger fields of view. The system includes an input to receive an input wavefront, a local oscillator to generate a reference wavefront, and an optical combiner such as a beam splitter to combine the input wavefront and the reference wavefront to produce an output wavefront which is received by a detector. According to the invention, an optical element is supported to receive the reference wavefront and generate, in effect, a plurality of local oscillator point sources which provide a set of wavefronts that cover the required wider FOV. In the preferred embodiment, the optical element is a diffuser, and may optionally include a mechanism for rotating the diffuser to reduce speckle. In an alternative embodiment the optical element is a lenslet array. The spacing of the lenslets in the array is preferably such that the angle subtended by centers of two adjacent lenslets as seen from the center of the system's collimating lens or mirror is less than 0.83&#x3bb;/D, where &#x3bb; is the wavelength of the radiation, and D is the aperture diameter. This invention finds utility in any application which uses coherent beam combining, including optical communication systems, laser radar systems, and other fields of endeavor.
