A method for selecting a new cell for a station in a cellular telecommunications system, the station being associated with a current cell is provided. The method comprises the steps of measuring at the station the strength of a communication from the current cell, measuring at the station the strength of a communication from at least one other cell, modifying the result of the measuring step in which the strength of the communication from at least one other cell and/or the current cell is measured to take into account a condition of the current and/or said at least one other cell if the measured strength of the communication from the current cell and/or the measured strength of the communication from the at least one other cell satisfy a predetermined condition, if the modifying step is performed, comparing the measured strength of the communication from the current cell and the measured strength of the communication from the at least one other cell at least one of the measured strengths being modified in the modifying step and depending on the results of the comparison changing the current cell with which the station is associated.

Method of selecting a new cell

A communication method and system are provided that include providing synchronization information about a co-sited downlink carrier. This information may be transmitted to from a base station to a mobile device. The mobile device may receive this information and perform handover or measurements based on the received synchronization information.

Method and apparatus for utilizing synchronization information

A method and system for cell identification for uplink interference avoidance that includes a network device and mobile device in a communications network. Inter-frequency measurements are performed by a mobile device on a downlink carrier currently not used by the mobile device. A result of the inter-frequency measurements is compared with another value. Second measurements are initiated on the downlink carrier currently not used by the mobile device based on the comparison. A cell is identified based on the second measurements. The inter-frequency measurements may include receive signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurements, received signal code power (RSCP) measurements, or average channel power-to-total signal power ratio (Ec/Io) measurements. The second measurements may include signal quality measurements.

Method and apparatus for cell identification for uplink interference avoidance using inter-frequency measurements

A method transmits a certain sequence of symbols, where a frame is constructed of a certain number of consecutive symbols. The symbols belonging to the sequence are transmitted using at least two antennas and the transmission of the sequence of symbols is with a certain transmission pattern. The transmission of the sequence of symbols is started from a predefined antenna and the transmission pattern is started from the beginning in the beginning of each frame. Also disclosed is an apparatus and a network element for controlling the transmission of a sequence of symbols.

Method for transmitting a sequence of symbols

A method and system for soft handover detection for uplink interference avoidance that includes a network device and mobile device in a communications network. The mobile device uses a downlink carrier. A parameter, such as a signal strength or a signal quality, of the downlink carrier and one of a co-sited downlink carrier or neighboring downlink carrier is measured. A soft handover area is detected by the network device or the mobile device based on comparing the signal strength or the signal quality of the downlink carrier with the signal strength or the signal quality of one of the co-sited downlink carrier or the neighboring downlink carrier. The downlink carrier, the co-sited downlink carrier or the neighboring downlink carrier may be from a core band, (e.g., 2.0 GHz), or extension band, (e.g., 2.5 GHz), of frequencies or combination thereof. The system provides for handovers while uplink carrier interference is avoided.

Method and apparatus for soft handover area detection for uplink interference avoidance

Signal strength measurements for different frequencies in different cells are calibrated in a cellular communications system. The signal strength of first and second frequencies in at least one cell of a plurality of cells is repeatedly measured. A measurement history is created for said first and second frequencies in at least the one cell. Each measurement history is based on the signal strength measurements of one of the first and second frequencies in the respective one cell. The measurement histories are stored. A respective correction factor is determined for each possible pair of first and second frequencies in at least the one cell. Each correction factor is based on the stored measurement history of the first and second frequencies in the pair. The respective correction factor for a pair of first and second frequencies cell is applied when comparing the signal strength measurements of the first and second frequencies in said pair.

Calibration of signal strength measurements in a cellular communications system

A method for a mobile station and a base station to which the mobile is being handed over, and corresponding apparatuses for use by the mobile and the base station. The method for use by the mobile station is for determining whether dynamic configurations are in use by the base station to which the mobile is being handed over, and the method for use by the base station is for determining whether to use a dynamic configuration (if the base station uses dynamic configurations) or to switch to a static preconfiguration in communicating with the mobile. The base station to which the mobile is being handed over is of one wireless communication system (such as the UTRA wireless communication system) and the base station doing the handing over is of another type (such as GSM). Both base stations are assumed to broadcast control signals on a respective broadcast control channel.

Method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving dynamic configuration parameters in a third generation cellular telephone network

A method for performing a cell reselection in a system comprised of a hierarchy of cells, wherein cells of one layer of the hierarchy have a size that differs from cells of another layer of the hierarchy. The method includes steps of (a) identifying to a user equipment a layer to which individual cells in a neighbor cell list are associated; (b) when performing neighbor cell measurements for reselection purposes, avoiding a measurement of cells in the list that are larger than a current serving cell unless a Cell Selection (S) parameter falls below a search threshold parameter (Ssearch), and is greater than zero; and (c), if S is less than or equal to zero, and no cell reselection to a better cell is in process, beginning a measurement of neighbor cells without regard for their hierarchical level. If the user equipment has made cell reselection to N different cells on the same hierarchical layer within a time Tmax, the user equipment initiates a reselection procedure for larger neighbor cells. This procedure accommodates user equipment that is moving at a relatively high speed through the cells. If the user equipment locates a larger cell, which fulfills cell reselection criteria Sn>0 and Qn>Qs&plus;Qoffset &plus;Qhyst for a period of time Treselection, cell reselection to the larger cell is made. Furthermore, if the user equipment performs a cell reselection to the larger cell, the user equipment does not attempt to reselect to a smaller cell within a time X, unless an immediate cell evaluation is triggered, wherein the time X can be pre-specified, or can be set by the network.
