A method for a device to receive a user input commanding the device to perform an action includes detecting a first amount of force exerted onto a graphical user interface, providing an indication that additional force must be exerted onto the graphical user interface to command the device to perform the action, detecting a second amount of force larger than the first amount of force exerted onto the graphical user interface, and providing a signal including data commanding performance of the action.

Receiving user input on a graphical user interface

A device includes a graphical user interface configured to receive a user input by user exertion of force onto the graphical user interface. The device further includes a detection logic operatively connected to the graphical user interface and configured to produce a signal including data indicative of a first amount of force exerted at a location on the graphical user interface. The device also includes an indication logic operatively connected to the detection logic and configured to determine based on the signal including data indicative of the first amount of force exerted at the location on the graphical user interface that the first amount of force is insufficient to command the device to perform an action based on the user input. The indication logic is further configured to produce a signal including data indicating that additional force must be exerted to command the device to perform the action.

A mobile terminal having a plurality of communication operation modes is operated by determining a current communication operation mode of the plurality of communication operation modes of the mobile terminal, determining a current voltage of a battery that powers the mobile terminal, comparing the current voltage of the battery with a battery voltage threshold associated with the current communication operation mode, and changing the current communication operation mode to another one of the plurality of communication operation modes based on the comparison of the current voltage of the battery with the battery voltage threshold associated with the current communication operation mode.

A battery-driven electronic device, e.g., a radio communication terminal, which is operable in different modes with related power consumption, includes a data presentation function and a power consumption detecting function to establish current power consumption based on established current power consumption. By detecting and presenting data pertaining to the current power consumption, rather than a predetermined expected way of use, such as talk mode or standby mode, better control may be given to a user of the device so that it may be operated in such a manner so as to extend the battery life.

Method and apparatus for calibrating a rechargeable battery for mobile telephones and other electronic devices. Calibration is accomplished during a process of completely charging the battery by determining the total amount of charge accepted by the battery during the charging process, and providing a value of total charge capacity of the battery based, at least in part, on the total amount of charge accepted by the battery. The total charge capacity of the battery is used to calculate remaining battery capacity and to predict the remaining operational time of the device. Alternative calibration procedures are provided if the battery is not completely discharged before charging or if the battery is not fully charged by the charging process. The calibration procedures of the invention require no interaction from a user (other than his initiating the normal charging process), and typically permits a calibration to be carried out notwithstanding varying usage habits of different users.

Method and apparatus for calibrating a rechargeable battery

A method and apparatus for extending the cycle life of a battery by using different charge voltages or different current cut-offs to recharge the battery during the course of the battery's life. The capacity of a battery is gradually depleted as the battery is repeatedly charged and discharged. The rate at which the battery capacity is depleted varies in accordance to the charge voltage, or the current cut-off, used to recharge the battery. For example, higher charge voltages cause the capacity to be more rapidly depleted than lower charge voltages. A battery may be charged using a high charge voltage, e.g., its rated charge voltage, during periods of expected high usage. To extend the battery's cycle life, the battery may be charged using a low charge voltage during periods of expected low usage.
