Disclosed are amber polyester compositions suitable for packaging food and beverages wherein the compositions significantly absorbs light of wavelengths shorter than about 550 nm which is achieved by a combination of several colorants, most of which are copolymerized into the polyester.

Disclosed are blue, diol anthraquinone blue colorant compounds having excellent thermal stability and which can be reacted into or copolymerized with polyester thus providing a blue-colored polyesters useful for manufacturing a variety of shaped articles such as photographic film base, particularly roentgenographic (X-ray) film. Also disclosed are blue anthraquinone colorant compounds which contain two ethylenically-unsaturated (vinyl), photopolymerizable radicals which may be derived from the aforesaid diol anthraquinone compounds. The anthraquinone colorant compounds containing two ethylenically-unsaturated may be reacted into or copolymerized (or cured) with ethylenically-unsaturated monomers to produce colored vinyl polymers.

The invention pertains to methods for preparing modified condensation polymers wherein the steps include: (a) preparing a polymer colloid system comprising a first polymer dispersed in a liquid continuous phase; (b) introducing the polymer colloid system into a glycolysis reaction medium prior to or during a glycolysis reaction wherein the glycolysis reaction medium comprises a polyester, copolyester, polyesteramide, polycarbonate or a mixture thereof; wherein the glycolysis reaction medium optionally comprises a diol component; and polymerizing the fully or partially glycolyzed polyester, copolyester, polyesteramide, polycarbonate or mixture thereof, thereby providing a condensation polymer/first polymer matrix.

Methods of making modified condensation polymers

The invention pertains to methods for preparing modified condensation polymers wherein the steps include: preparing a polymer colloid system comprising a first polymer dispersed in a liquid continuous phase; introducing the polymer colloid system into a condensation reaction medium prior to or during the condensation reaction, wherein the condensation reaction medium comprises (1) a diacid, di-isocyanate, dialkyl carbonate, diaryl carbonate, dihalo carbonate or a mixture thereof, wherein the condensation reaction medium optionally comprises a diol component; and polymerizing the diol component and component ( ), thereby forming a modified condensation polymer.

This invention relates to PET copolymer composition that have both 1,4-cyclohexanedimethal (CHDM) and isophthalic acid moieties copolymerized. These compositions have better oxygen and carbon dioxide barrier properties than either PET homopolymer or CHDM-modified PET copolymers. These copolymer compositions are useful for packaging applications (such as carbonated soft drink bottles) requiring barrier properties to oxygen and carbon dioxide at least as good or better than PET homopolymer.

Disclosed is a method of providing a thin copolyester coating on paper wherein the coating has good peel strength which comprises extruding a film of copolyester onto paper to form a coated sheet and passing the paper through a nip formed by a pair of cooperating chill and pressure rolls, wherein the copolyester consists essentially of repeat units from terephthalic acid, ethylene glycol, about 1.5-20 mol % of an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic glycol having 2 to 10 carbon atoms, and 0 to about 1.0 mol % of a polyfunctional branching agent. Also disclosed is the coated paper prepared by this method.
