The present disclosure describes several embodiments for methods of deagglomerating, debundling, and dispersing carbon nanotubes and functionalizing such carbon nanotubes without damage to the properties of the carbon nanotubes. The embodiments include methods for determining optimized conditions to effectively produce master batches of carbon nanotube polymers and solvent systems; determining what moieties or chemistries effectively disperse carbon nanotubes without deleterious effect upon electrical properties of a resulting composite; determining the most efficient processes for introducing dispersants to carbon nanotubes; determining surface characteristics of carbon nanotubes induced by deagglomerating, debundling, and dispersion processes; evaluating properties (such as conductivity) of carbon nanotube dispersions in cured coatings and composite applications; determining what structural elements comprise efficient/effective dispersants for carbon nanotubes; and evaluating the hyperdispersant properties in carbon nanotube composite and coatings systems.

Functionalization and dispersion of carbon nanotubes

Disclosed herein are novel methods to handling carbon nano materials and forming composite materials from carbon nano materials and polymers such as polyurethane and polyurea materials. Such novel methods provide a number of benefits to a polymer processor and end user of any resulting materials or products. As disclosed herein, methods of incorporating carbon nano materials into polymers can achieve benefits regarding electrical properties, modulus, and thermal stability as well as other benefits. However, enhancing and creating such improvements in material properties must be done with care because creating or enhancing one property does not always result in the creation or improvement in other properties. For example, thermal stability, electrical conductivity, and mechanical properties can be optimized in different ways, and at different loadings of differing carbon nano materials. Thus, it is necessary to carefully consider a number of factors when designing methods for incorporating carbon nano materials into polymers.

Carbon nano materials in crosslinked polyurethane and polyurea applications with optimized properties

A composite formulation for use in lightweight molded components includes an untreated low density filler, such as glass bubbles, a solvated polymer mixture, and polymer paste. In one embodiment the solvated polymer mixture is used to treat the low density filler to form a treated low density filler. The solvated polymer mixture many include a thermoplastic resin or a reactive resin and an additive package. The additive package may include a dispersing agent and a silane carrier composition.

Renewable highly biobased polybenzoxazine thermosets for composite applications

The present invention relates novel furan based amine cross-linkers with improved thermomechanical and water barrier properties. The novelty of this invention is the use of aromatic, and hydrophobic aliphatic aldehydes to bridge two furfuryl amines, which yields a diamine or tetra amines with a significantly enhanced hydrophobic character. These diamine cross-linkers exhibit enhanced water barrier properties and thermomechanical properties when cured with both commercial and synthetic epoxies.

Renewable furan based amine curing agents for epoxy thermoset

Grafted triglycerides prepared from an epoxidized triglyceride and an acid anhydride containing 4 to 40 carbon atoms are reacted with an epoxy resin and an anhydride curing agent to yield an epoxy thermoset. By varying the length of fatty residues on the grafted triglyceride, the number of fatty residues per triglyceride, the identity of the epoxy resin and the anhydride curing agent, it is possible to prepare epoxy thermosets that exhibit superior physical properties compared to the properties of epoxy thermosets prepared without the grafted triglyceride, or as compared to epoxy thermosets wherein the epoxidized triglyceride is used in place of the grafted triglyceride. A significant improvement in fracture toughness with a minimal reduction of glass transition temperature may be thus achieved.
