A center console of a motor vehicle has a cover that is able to be opened, which closes a storage compartment that lies thereunder in its closed position and releases this in an open position. A comfortable adjustment of the cover is possible via an adjustment mechanism. The adjustment mechanism is formed in such a way that it first lifts the cover during opening and adjusts it backwards and subsequently swings it upwards.

For the vertical alignment of a hinged covering flap, in particular of a glove-compartment cover, it is proposed to insert the hinge leaf on the cover side, accompanied by the spring-loaded engagement of teeth which protrude and engage into a row of teeth, into a channel fixedly disposed with respect to the vehicle body, and to secure the resulting alignment position with the use of a locking clip.

A knee protection device in a motor vehicle having a dimensionally stable, cushioned and essentially plate-shaped load distributor which is supported on the end side by curved deformable holders on a cross member fixed to the vehicle. The energy absorption capacity of the two holders is fully utilized by spanning a reinforcement on the back side of the load distributor. The reinforcement has an approximately hat-shaped cross-section, extends at least near the holders and has outwardly projecting flanges which are connected with the load distributor.

Motor vehicle instrument panel including a stiffening panel defining an instrument panel shape. The stiffening panel includes an airbag cover section and a hinge connection section which connects the airbag cover section to adjacent stiffening panel sections. A reinforcement mat is connected to a side of the stiffening panel which faces away from a vehicle passenger space bounded by the instrument panel when in an in-use position in a vehicle. The reinforcement mat includes a plurality of openings, and the reinforcement mat and stiffening panel are connected together by pressing of material of the stiffening panel into the openings of the reinforcement mat thereby providing an intimate connection of the reinforcement mat and stiffening panel without requiring additional fastening material.

A cover sleeve for the protective covering of a clearance for the passage of a steering column of a motor vehicle through a dashboard is disclosed. To accommodate adjustment of the steering column as to its inclination and length, the cover sleeve is fastened by one end to the dashboard and by the other end to a steering column casing. The cover sleeve is braced between its fastening ends by a displaceable frame which is mounted on the casing and is acted upon in its direction of displacement by a resilient tensioning element.

A glove box, for motor vehicles is arranged beneath the instrument panel, and is provided with a lid pivotably mounted on it about a horizontal axis. A closing device secures the lid to the glove box. To reduce the risk of injury to vehicle occupants which results from the closing device, a lock part of the closing device is arranged on the underside of the instrument panel with a latchbolt fastened inside a cavity on the inside of the lid and a latch which can be activated through a traction cable from a remote location is provided.

For obtaining a damped movement into the opened position in a glove compartment lid in a motor vehicle, a piston-cylinder unit constructed as brake is provided whose piston rod is operatively connected with a retaining member pivotally connected at the glove compartment lid. The air compressed during the opening operation by the piston leaves through a calibrated opening into the free atmosphere.
