Methods of protecting fruit crops from flying insect pests and of repelling flying insects using aromatic amide compounds are disclosed. The methods apply the compounds to various surfaces, such as the fruit crops, the ground or structures adjacent to the fruit crops, or an object, article, human skin or animal. The compounds have the formula RCH—C(═O)—N(Cy), where RCHis a substituted phenyl group, each R group is independently C-Calkyl, substituted C-Calkyl, (substituted) C-Caryl, C-Calkoxy, C-Caryloxy, halogen, nitro, cyano, cyanate, isocyanate, nitroso, C-Calkylthio, phenylthio, (halogen-substituted) C-Calkylsulfonyl, phenylsulfonyl, tolylsulfonyl, amino, mono- or di-C-Calkylamino, diphenylamino, di-C-Calkylamido, formyl, C-Cacyl, or C-Calkoxycarbonyl; x is an integer of 1 to 5; x+y=5; Cy is a C-C(substituted) alkadiyl, a C-C(substituted) alkenediyl, or a (substituted) diyl of the formula —(CHCH)—O—(CHCH)—, —(CHCH)—NR'—(CHCH)— or —(CHCH)—S—(CHCH)— that, along with the amide N atom, forms a non-aromatic cyclic group; and R′ is C-Calkyl, substituted C-Calkyl, (substituted) C-Caryl, or (substituted) benzyl.

This invention offers an effective method of decreasing expression of apolipoprotein E and increasing expression of at least one of either LDL-receptor protein or AbcA1 protein including selecting mammalian cells expressing apoE and at least one of either LDL-receptor protein or AbcA1 protein, contacting the mammalian cell with an effective amount of a compound having general formula (I) or general formula (II) in an amount sufficient to decrease expression of the apoE and increase expression of at least one of the LDL-receptor protein or the AbcA1 protein in the mammalian cell.

This invention offers an effective method of inhibiting the expression of apolipoprotein E by mammalian cells. Apolipoprotein E is a protein that plays a significant role in the development of Alzheimer's Disease in humans. The method comprises administering an effective amount of a triarylmethyl amine compound having the general formula: wherein the Rgroup may comprise acyclic amines and aliphatic amines. The Rgroup may comprise one of three aryl varieties: aryl, substituted aryl, or heterocycle. Triarylamine compounds inhibit apolipoprotein E expression in mammalian cells. In one aspect of the invention the mammalian cells may be human cells, and more specifically may be human brain cells.
