The at least one processing device is configured to receive in a storage system from at least one host device at least first and second different input-output timeout values for respective first and second different logical storage devices of the storage system, to store the received input-output timeout values in association with respective identifiers of the first and second logical storage devices in at least one data structure of the storage system, and to control processing of input-output operations, received in the storage system from the at least one host device and targeting respective ones of the first and second logical storage devices, based at least in part on the corresponding input-output timeout values stored in the at least one data structure of the storage system.

An apparatus in one embodiment includes at least one processing device comprising a processor coupled to a memory. The at least one processing device is configured to obtain, in a host device, inter-system response time information based at least in part on one or more response times measured by at least one of first and second storage systems relative to another one of the first and second storage systems, and to automatically control, based at least in part on the obtained inter-system response time information, active-standby designations for respective ones of the first and second storage systems. For example, in some embodiments, automatically controlling active-standby designations for respective ones of the first and second storage systems illustratively comprises controlling activation of an active-standby mode of operation based at least in part on comparison of at least a portion of the inter-system response time information to one or more specified thresholds.

An apparatus includes at least one processing device comprising a processor coupled to a memory. The processing device is configured to send at least one command to a target storage system, to receive, in response to the at least one command, information characterizing one or more replication parameters supported by the target storage system, and to configure a replication process to replicate data from a source storage system to the target storage system utilizing at least a particular selected one of the one or more replication parameters supported by the target storage system. The command may comprise, for example, a Get Feature command that obtains a feature list providing the information characterizing the replication parameters supported by the target storage system. As another example, the command may comprise an Inquiry command that obtains a designated page providing the information characterizing the replication parameters supported by the target storage system.

Host-resident software such as a Multi-Path Input-Output (MPIO) driver generates notifications of scheduled host shutdowns and unscheduled host shutdowns. A storage node generates emergency snapshots of storage objects masked to the host server in response to receipt of an unscheduled shutdown notification. The storage node also generates emergency snapshots of storage objects masked to a host server in response to detection of a reboot sequence of the host server when a corresponding scheduled shutdown notification was not received beforehand.

In an active-active replication environment in which sequential read IOs are distributed across storage array ports and replicas, a first read data size controls selection of a different path to a currently targeted replica to distribute sequential reads across storage system ports and a second read data size controls when a different replica is selected to distribute the sequential reads across storage systems. The storage arrays that maintain the replicas are phase-coordinated to pre-fetch only sequential data that will be accessed in the near future from their local replica. For example, a first storage array prefetches sequential data from a first replica in chunks corresponding to the first data size until sequential data corresponding to the second data size has been prefetched, skips sequential addresses corresponding to the second data size, and prefetches sequential data corresponding to the first data size that is next in sequence relative to the skipped sequential addresses.

An apparatus in one embodiment includes at least one processing device comprising a processor coupled to a memory. The at least one processing device is configured to identify a logical storage device accessible in at least first and second storage systems, to measure response times for accessing the logical storage device in each of the first and second storage systems, and to modify, based at least in part on the measured response times, asymmetric access state settings for the logical storage device. Modifying asymmetric access state settings for the logical storage device in some embodiments illustratively comprises modifying asymmetric logical unit access (ALUA) or asymmetric namespace access (ANA) state settings for the logical storage device. Such modifications are illustratively performed in a dynamic manner that responds to variations in the measured response times so as to facilitate load balancing across storage controllers of the first and second storage systems.

Dynamic configuration of logical storage devices accessible across multiple storage systems

An apparatus in an illustrative embodiment comprises at least one processing device that includes a processor coupled to a memory. The at least one processing device is configured to associate a logical storage volume with at least one path between a host and at least a given one of a plurality of storage nodes of a distributed storage system, and to associate a proxy volume with respective sets of one or more paths from the host to each of the plurality of storage nodes of the distributed storage system. The at least one processing device is further configured to obtain an input-output operation directed to the logical storage volume, and to redirect the input-output operation to the proxy volume over a selected one of the paths associated with the proxy volume. Such an arrangement can avoid one or more host-side restrictions, thereby enhancing scalability of the distributed storage system.

An apparatus comprises at least one processing device configured to implement a multi-path layer in a host device, wherein the multi-path layer controls delivery of input-output (IO) operations from the host device to a storage system over selected ones of a plurality of paths through a network. The multi-path layer is configured, for each of at least a subset of the IO operations, to store at least a process identifier, a user identifier and an access type for the IO operation. The multi-path layer is further configured to perform analytics on the stored process identifiers, user identifiers and access types to detect an access pattern, and responsive to the detected access pattern having one or more designated characteristics associated with malware, to generate an alert. The alert may be generated by inserting security alert indicators into respective ones of the IO operations, for extraction therefrom by the storage system.

An apparatus in an illustrative embodiment comprises at least one processing device, with the processing device being configured to receive in a storage system from a host device an indication of a data size utilized in a multi-path layer of the host device to select paths for delivery of input-output operations to different storage controllers of the storage system, to determine in the storage system a prefetch data size based at least in part on the data size indication received from the host device, and responsive to detection in the storage system of sequential data reads in input-output operations received from the host device, to prefetch from one or more backend storage devices of the storage system, into a memory associated with a particular one of the storage controllers of the storage system, an amount of data that is determined based at least in part on the prefetch data size.

Techniques for dynamically configuring a multi-site storage system such as a metro cluster using input/output (IO) response time (RT) hints from a host computer. The techniques include receiving IO RT hints at each storage appliance of the multi-site storage system from the host computer, which is initially identified as 'local' or “remote” relative to a physical location of the storage appliance. The techniques further include modifying, by the storage appliance, an initial local or remote identification of the host computer relative to the physical location of the storage appliance based on the received IO RT hints, dynamically changing, by the storage appliance, states of IO paths between the host computer and nodes of the storage appliance based on the modified local or remote identification of the host computer, and providing, by the storage appliance, notification of the changed states of the IO paths to the host computer.

An apparatus comprises a processing device that includes a processor coupled to a memory. The processing device is configured to identify a source multi-path device in first multi-pathing software, to create a target multi-path device in second multi-pathing software different than the first multi-pathing software, to copy a set of paths of the source multi-path device to the target multi-path device, to add to the set of paths of the source multi-path device a new path to the target multi-path device, and to remove paths other than the new path from the source multi-path device. Such an arrangement illustratively provides non-disruptive switching of path selection functionality of a host device from the source multi-path device of the first multi-pathing software to the target multi-path device of the second multi-pathing software. The source and target multi-path devices illustratively utilize different storage access protocols, such as respective SCSI and NVMe access protocols.

The at least one processing device is further configured to perform a check at each of one or more points in the IO stack to confirm that a given IO operation directed to a given device of the IO stack is received from an expected overlying device of the IO stack.
