The present invention provides an image display system that secures a bright image and reduces cross-talk of a three-dimensional image display of a liquid-crystal type and provides a large viewing angle. The image display system includes a filter having a first area for transmitting light of a specific polarization and a second area for transmitting a light of polarization axis orthogonal to the light of the specific polarization provided repeatedly in the vertical direction, and a light source () including a light-emitting source (), a polarizer () for emitting the light in the forms of the light having the specific polarization and the light having the polarization axis orthogonal to the specific polarization, and an optical element () for refracting the lights having the different polarizations into the directions toward the left and right eyes respectively and irradiating the same onto a liquid crystal panel ().

Image display system and light source unit

The invention is intended to change the viewing angle in accordance with a viewer's intention. Disposed between a light source () and a liquid crystal display panel (), a Fresnel lens () converts light coming from the light source () to approximately parallel light and allows plural images to be displayed to different positions. The light source () is configured in such a manner that lighting positions and lighting regions can be changed. Lighting control means for changing the lighting positions or lighted regions of the light sources () is provided.

Image display apparatus

A color display having a monochromatic light source, an optical switch and an array of pixels formed of anisotropically emitting photoluminescent material may be combined such that large losses often associated with color filter and polarizers are avoided such that a high efficient display results. The optical switch may be a liquid crystal device that is tuned to the wavelength of the monochromatic light source. The monochromatic light source may be made from OLED material that emits in the violet, near UV or blue spectrum and may be polarized. The array of pixels may include a transmissive pixel when the backlight spectrum is the same as the color of one of the pixels.

Color display device and method

The present invention is intended to improve assembleability of a portion of a liquid crystal display panel. An image display in which, even when an observer moves vertically in a position viewing an image, a bright image is obtained. There are provided a liquid-crystal display panel () capable of transmitting light projected from backward, a light source () for projecting a first light as a particular polarization of light and a second light orthogonal in polarization axis to the first light to the liquid-crystal display panel (), and a stripe-patterned filter () arranged between the liquid-crystal display panel () and the light source () and having, repeatedly in a given direction, first areas for transmitting the first light and second areas for transmitting the second light.
