An electronic device may include radios that transmit signals using antennas. Control circuitry may assign radio-frequency exposure (RFE) budgets to the radios. The control circuitry may classify and predict attributes of application data for transmission over the radios, may generate a per-radio data prediction based on the classified attributes, and may generate the RFE budgets based on the classified attributes. Each radio may transmit application data based on its data prediction and according to its RFE budget. A dynamic portion of the RFE budget may be reserved for control signaling. RFE planning in this way may ensure that the device optimally utilizes its RFE budget, increasing overall RFE during some time periods so sufficient transmit power is available, and ensuring that RFE is distributed across the radios depending on the amount and criticality of the data to be transmitted by each radio.

Control signaling reservation for radio-frequency exposure management

User equipment in close proximity may transfer data and control information. For example, the user equipment may exchange data or data sets between each other. Each user equipment can receive and transmit data using radio access technologies. A group of user equipments may include active user equipment and passive user equipment. Active user equipment connects with one or more base stations and transfers data on a wireless communication network via the base station. The active user equipment may communicate with other active user equipment and passive user equipment. Passive user equipment may not connect to any base station and/or the wireless communication network and may communicate with other passive user equipment and active user equipment (e.g., via a sidelink, peer-to-peer, or device-to-device channel).

Systems and methods for user equipment group management and control

Systems of the present disclosure include an electronic device that manages operations in low temperature environments for improved battery performance. Such management can be based on a temperature and/or a charge level of a battery of the electronic device. When the temperature of the battery is below a threshold, the components of the electronic device can be operated to generate heat until the temperature of the battery is at or above the threshold temperature. The operations can be selected and performed based on available charge in the battery, the minimum temperature change that would raise the temperature of the battery to a temperature threshold, the available temperature change that would be induced by performing one or more operations, user inputs, and the like. Such heat generation can allow the electronic device to remain on and maintain its operations despite exposure to an external environment that presents low temperatures.

Battery temperature management

An electronic device may detect a message request to send one or more redundant messages to a response network. The one or more messages may contain information previously sent from the electronic device to the response network. The electronic device may determine an entropy factor corresponding to the relatedness of the one or more messages to previously sent messages, and the electronic device may send one or more redundant bits in the place of the one or more messages if the entropy factor is below a threshold value corresponding to network resources.

Efficient communication in limited resource environments

Some aspects of this disclosure relate to apparatuses and methods for communicating in a first radio access technology (RAT) and a second RAT. A user equipment (UE) can receive, from a first base station using the first RAT, first configuration information for the UE to communicate with a second base station via the second RAT; and receive, from the first base station using the first RAT, a downlink message to enable a communication link between the UE and the second base station via the second RAT. The downlink message includes second configuration information for the UE to communicate with the second base station via the second RAT. The UE can establish the communication link between the UE and the second base station using the second RAT based on a link configuration obtained from the first configuration information and the second configuration information.

Cooperative communication for user equipment groups

A user equipment (UE) device may reside in a state of dual connectivity with a master cell group (MCG) and a secondary cell group (SCG), wherein the radio access technologies of the MCG and the SCG are different. While in the dual connectivity state, the UE device may transition to a mode of reduced activity (e.g., processing and/or RF activity) relative to the secondary cell group (SCG) in order to save power, e.g., when traffic flow via the SCG is below a threshold, or when scheduling activity on the SCG is low. Various mechanisms may be employed to reduce activity, e.g., mechanisms such as reduction of beam monitoring, deactivation of secondary cells of the SCG, reduction of number of active antenna elements, employment of longer periods for periodic measurement and reporting processes, etc.

Traffic-rate based branch deactivation for UE power efficiency in a dual-connectivity mode

A wireless device may connect, using a first subscriber identity module (SIM), to a first base station according to a first radio access technology (RAT) and a second base station according to a second RAT. The wireless device may also connect, using a second SIM, to a third base station according to the first RAT. The wireless device may, in response to the second SIM performing a call according to the first RAT, disable the first RAT for the first SIM and perform, using the first SIM, data communication according to the second RAT while the call is performed using the second SIM.

Communication coordination and power saving techniques for multi-subscriber identity module devices

This application describes methods and apparatus to manage data transport across multiple radio links for 5G-capable wireless devices. Under certain criteria, including performance of at least one radio link, a mobility state of a 5G-capable wireless device, and data transport requirements for a latency sensitive application session, the 5G-capable wireless device sends buffer status report (BSR) requests for one or more both of the radio links to prioritize and transition uplink (UL) data between radio links before a measurement reporting threshold is met. In some embodiments, the 5G-capable wireless device proactively sends BSR requests for radio resources before the UL data is generated by the latency sensitive application session. In some embodiments, the 5G-capable wireless device duplicates UL data for the latency sensitive application session across multiple radio links.

Data transport management for dual connectivity 5G-capable wireless devices

This disclosure relates to methods and devices for mitigating overheating in a user equipment device (UE). The UE is configured to communicate over each of LTE and 5G NR and may be configured to communicate through 5G NR over each of a Sub-6 GHz and a millimeter Wave (mmW) frequency band. The UE is configured to establish an ENDC connection with an enB and one or more gNBs. The UE implements intelligent transmission modification and cell measurement adjustments to mitigate overheating and reduce battery drain.

Smart mechanism to manage thermal impact in 5G NR

The embodiments disclosed herein include capturing images via cameras or light sensors of a mobile communication device, processing the image to determine obstructed (e.g., by foliage) portions and unobstructed (e.g., open sky) portions of the images, and generating a grid indicating the obstructed and unobstructed portions. The device may then adjust operating characteristics, such as synchronizing with a communication hub or other mobile communication device, performing a handover with the communication hub or other mobile communication device, determining transmission power or an amount to increase transmission power, selecting an antenna, determining a beam direction, determining a discontinuous reception cycle or a frequency for receiving data, providing an indication to stop or proceed through certain areas (e.g., to take advantage of areas with higher signal quality or avoid areas with lower signal quality), and the like, based on the obstructed and unobstructed portions identified in the grid.

Canopy coverage determination for improved wireless connectivity

Methods, devices, and apparatus to adapt operating parameters for satellite signal reception and transmission by a wireless device to mitigate effects of fading due to specular reflections are described herein. The wireless device measures received signal power levels and compares characteristics of the measurements over an observation duration to at least one fading criteria to determine whether to operate in a normal or adaptive mode. While operating in the adaptive mode, the wireless device alternates between high performance mode time periods and low performance mode time periods. The wireless device indicates to a ground station associated with the satellite in which operating mode the wireless device is operating via an uplink data message transmitted during a data cycle at the start of a high or low performance mode time period. The ground station schedules data transmissions accordingly during subsequent data cycles of the high or low performance mode time periods.

Adaptive operation to mitigate specular reflections

This disclosure provide various techniques for decreasing the time it takes user equipment to tune away from a compromised network connection. By more quickly detecting a signal characteristic issue (e.g., signal quality issue) in the compromised signal and performing mitigation actions, the user equipment may decrease power consumption and increase data throughput. The signal quality issue may be detected by monitoring the location of the user equipment, a channel impulse response of the user equipment, and/or a block error rate (BLER) of a signal, among other methods. The data obtained may be fed into confidence validation logic, which may determine a level of confidence that the signal quality issue may cause a weak or broken connection between the user equipment and a network. The confidence validation logic may, based on the determination, operate the user equipment in an active state, a suspend state, or a release state.

Systems and methods for early FR2 tune-away

This disclosure relates to techniques for a wireless device to perform millimeter wavelength communication with increased reliability and power efficiency using sensor inputs. The sensor inputs may include motion, rotation, or temperature measurements, among various possibilities. The sensor inputs may be used when performing beamforming tracking, antenna configuration, transmit and receive chain measurements and selection, and/or in any of various other possible operations.
