A system for providing architecture and signaling, by which a mobile communications device&#x2014;active within a WLAN environment&#x2014;may be effectively and efficiently interfaced with a CDMA2000 network to provide cooperative and concurrent VoIP and over-the-air (OTA) communications, is disclosed. A wireless communications system comprises a mobile station, operating in a wireless LAN environment. The mobile station access the Internet through a wireless LAN access point. The area is also provided service by a CDMA2000-based over-the-air network. A provisioning server, within the CDMA2000-based network, is accessible via the Internet. A mobile switching center is also within the CDMA2000-based network. An interface construct is communicatively coupled to the mobile switching center and to the wireless LAN, and is adapted to facilitate call traffic between the CDMA2000 network and the mobile station over the wireless LAN.

A method for providing mobile station control of data transmission rates in the wireless network is provided. The method includes transmitting data transmission rate (DTR) data from a base station to a mobile station. The DTR data comprises a first Walsh cover that is different from a second Walsh cover that identifies the base station. A DTR request is received from the mobile station at the base station. The DTR request comprises the first Walsh cover. A data transmission rate from the base station to the mobile station is reduced based on the DTR request.

Apparatus and method for reducing paging channel loading for broadcast multicast services in a wireless network

A system and method is provided for fast call set-up in a wireless communication system. A base station sets up a call from a mobile station by sending null frames to the mobile station on a forward traffic channel instead of sending a base station acknowledgement order. The mobile station sends a traffic channel preamble to the base station on a reverse traffic channel instead of sending a mobile station acknowledgment order. The fast call set-up procedure of the present invention reduces the call set-up time from approximately two (2) to three (3) seconds to approximately two hundred milliseconds (200 msec) to three hundred milliseconds (300 msec).

For use in a wireless network, a mobile station that can selectively use the reduced slot cycle mode under the control of a first wireless network base station. The reduced slot cycle controller, in response to receipt of the Page Response message, causes the message controller to transmit to the first mobile station a Release Order message comprising a selected slot cycle index (SCI) value at which the first mobile station will operate.

A handoff mechanism for a mobile station and wireless network preferably operating in a Z&#xd7;EV-DV mode, using scalable traffic channels where Z is a multiple of a 1&#xd7;EV-DV channel, including a distance-based handoff. The disclosed handoff mechanism can be used in conventional wireless telecommunications systems.
