A novel a polymer dispersant comprising an additive reaction product obtained by reacting a first monomer comprising a mixture of alkylacrylates of varying chain lengths with a second monomer comprising an olefinic carboxylic acylating agent under conditions effective for free radical polymerization of the first and second monomers to provide a base polymer comprising an acylated alkylacrylate copolymer, and wherein the base polymer is further reacted with a hydrocarbyl amine to provide an amine-functionalized polyalkylacrylate copolymer dispersant. The base polymer intermediate has a number average molecular weight between about 5,000 to about 50,000. The polyalkylacrylate copolymer dispersant has good dispersancy, low temperature properties, thickening efficiency, and antioxidancy properties. They also can improve fuel economy when used in engine lubricating compositions. They also are precipitation- or sedimentation-resistant, and do not cause or encourage such formations in finished fluids incorporating them.

Alkyl acrylate copolymer dispersants and uses thereof

A lubricant composition comprising a major amount of baseoil lubricant and a minor amount of lubricant additive. The lubricant additive includes (a) a dispersant containing at least one member selected from hydrocarbyl-substituted succinimides, hydrocarbyl-substituted amines, and Mannich base adducts derived from hydrocarbyl-substituted phenols condensed with an aldehyde and an amine, and (b) a viscosity index improver that includes a substantially linear block copolymer having a number average molecular weight as determined by gel permeation chromatography ranging from about 50,000 to about 250,000. The block copolymer is derived from a conjugated diene monomer containing no less than 5 carbon atoms and a monoalkenylarene monomer, wherein the block copolymer has an aromatic content ranging from about 10 wt. % to about 50 wt. % and an olefinic unsaturation ranging from about 0.5 wt. % to about 5 wt. %.

Lubricating oil compositions

A novel highly grafted, multi-functional olefin copolymer is provided comprising an additive reaction product of a method comprising reacting acylating agent with an olefin copolymer having a number average molecular weight greater than about 1,000 in the presence of a free radical initiator and essentially free of hydrocarbon solvent in an extruder to provide an olefin copolymer intermediate comprising an acylated olefin copolymer having a degree of grafting (DOG) of at least 0.5 wt. %, which copolymer intermediate's molecular weight is reduced, vacuum stripped of unreacted components, pelletized, dissolved in a neutral oil (preferably with inert gas sparging), and further reacted with a polyamine to provide a grafted multi-functional olefin copolymer viscosity modifier, and lubricating oil concentrates and compositions containing the same and uses thereof.

Transmission fluid compositions comprising a zinc detergent and at least one phosphorus-containing additive have enhanced performance capabilities. The use of the zinc detergent and the phosphorus-containing additive provide transmission fluids that exhibit high steel-on-steel coefficients of friction, particularly useful in continuously variable transmissions (CVT).

Polyalkyl (meth)acrylate copolymers comprising from about 12 to about 18 weight percent methyl methacrylate; from about 75 to about 85 weight percent of a C,-C,alkyl (meth)acrylate; and from about 2 to about 5 weight percent of a nitrogen-containing dispersant monomer provide excellent low temperature properties to lubricating oils.

Lubricating oil compositions having excellent thermal and oxidative stability, wear control, copper corrosion control and compatibility with seal materials comprising a mineral oil having a) a Viscosity Index of greater than 110 and an aniline point of greater than 110.degree. C. and/or b) a linear+single ring paraffin content of greater than 68 wt %, and at least one polymer selected from olefin (co) polymer(s), polyalkyl (meth) acrylate(s) and mixtures thereof. The lubricating oil compositions are particularly useful as manual transmission and axle lubricants.

Lubricating oil formulations

Automatic transmission fluids are described which contain a dispersant having a nitrogen to phosphorus mass ratio between about 3:1 and about 10:1, and at least one friction modifier. The use of dispersants having a nitrogen to phosphorus mass ratio between about 3:1 and about 10:1 provides automatic transmission fluids which exhibit good anti-shudder properties as well as a higher mid-point torque, a higher static torque in shifting clutch applications and better frictional durability as compared to similar automatic transmission fluids which contain dispersants having a nitrogen to phosphorus mass ratio of less than 3:1.

Automatic transmission fluids having enhanced performance capabilities

Non-dispersant poly (meth) acrylate copolymers comprising from about 5 to about 15 weight percent butyl methacrylate; from about 70 to about 90 weight percent of a C10-C15 alkyl (meth) acrylate; and from about 5 to about 10 weight percent of a C16-C30 alkyl (meth) acrylate provide excellent low temperature properties to lubricating oils.

The fluids have an oil-soluble boron content of about 0.001 to about 0.1%, an oil-soluble phosphorus content of about 0.005 to about 0.2%, and either no metal additive content or an oil-soluble metal content as one or more metal-containing additives of no more than about 100 ppm. Included in the fluids are: (a) at least 70 wt % of hydrogenated poly-.alpha.-olefin oligomer fluid with a viscosity in the range of 2-6 cSt at 100.degree. C.; (b) 2-20 wt % of acrylic viscosity index improver; (c) 4-25 wt % of oil-soluble dialkyl ester of a C.sub.4 to C.sub.14 .alpha.,.omega.-dicarboxylic acid with a pour point of -45.degree. C. or lower; (d) ashless dispersant; (e) friction modifier; and (f) oil-soluble inhibitors. The components are such that the fluid has (i) a KV of at least 6.8 cSt at 100.degree. C., (ii) a BV of 15,000 cP or less at -40.degree. C., (iii) a KV at 100.degree. C. of at least 6.0 cSt after 4 hours and at least 5.0 cSt after 20 hours in the Volkswagen taper roller bearing shear stability test. The fluids possess other excellent performance properties.

Lubricants having a Brookfield viscosity at -40.degree. C. equal to or below 20,000 cP (preferably 15,000 or less) are formed from blends composed of a major amount of mineral oil in the range of about 90N to about 140N; and minor amounts of poly-.alpha.-olefin oligomer (PAO) formed from 1-alkene of 6 to 20 carbon atoms and having a kinematic viscosity of about 2 cSt at 100.degree. C.; and vinylaromatic-maleic ester polymeric viscosity index improver. Synergistic low temperature viscometric properties are exhibited by typical compositions of this type.

Lubricants with enhanced low temperature properties

Power transmission fluids are described that have a Brookfield viscosity of 13,000 cP or less at -40.degree. C., a viscosity of at least 2.6 mPa.multidot.s at 150.degree. C. in the ASTM D-4683 method, and a viscosity of at least 6.8 cSt at 100.degree. C. after 40 cycles in the FISST of ASTM D-5275. This is achieved by use of particular base oil and additive components in specified proportions. Evaluations to date indicate that the compositions evaluated possess a combination of performance properties deemed necessary by an original equipment manufacturer for a new generation of electronically controlled automatic transmissions equipped with torque converter clutches capable of operating in a continuous slip mode.

Gear oil compositions

A 'cold-clash' gear problem associated with vehicular manual transmissions exposed to the cold is overcome by use of a special all-synthetic gear oil composition. The composition is composed of base oil and specified additive components. The base oil is a blend of di-(2-ethylhexyl)sebacate and three hydrogenated poly-.alpha.-olefin oligomers having kinematic viscosities at 100.degree. C. of about 40, about 8 cSt and about 2 cSt in specified proportions. The additive components comprise an organic sulfur-containing antiwear and/or extreme pressure agent, an organic phosphorus-containing antiwear and/or extreme pressure agent, a copper corrosion inhibitor, a rust inhibitor, a foam inhibitor, and an ashless dispersant. The gear oil has a boron content of about 0.0025 to about 0.07 wt %.
